We are taking a group of 19 to Paris on May 31. We like to have fairly inexpensive (25€) dinners in the evenings and would love to hear about any restaurants that can accommodate a large group. We do not insist on sitting at one table but from past trips know that many restaurants are too small for a group this large. We welcome your ideas! Merci.
Another idea is to target an area like rue Cler where there are several restaurants close by and then meet up at a designated point afterwards. That way you can split into smaller groups as necessary.
Jeannie, it sounds like the size of your group is roughly the size of Rick's tour groups to Paris/France and so may be able to be accommodated at restaurants they use…with advance notice, of course. I just took a quick spin through reviews to see if any were mentioned (didn't notice any) but readers who've been on one of those tours might chime in with favorites they were taken to? Hope so!
Thank you Kathy - we are hoping to find out where the Rick Steves tour groups eat in Paris. Anyone?
I've done at least 2 Rick Steves group meals at La Terrasse in the Rue Cler area right beside the Ecole Militaire Metro stop on the corner of Avenue de la Motte-Piquet and Avenue Bosquet. They have an upstairs room where they can accommodate groups. Both times there were other groups up there as well. Once it seemed to be a group of business people having a dinner. I am certain you would need to contact them ahead as they had specific servers for our groups.
I did another one last Fall in the Arc de Triomphe area but I will have to figure out what the name of that restaurant was.
editing to add: Sorry can't quite figure out where we ate at the end of the Paris and Heart of France trip. I, uh..., had some wine with some of my fellow tour members in the hotel bar before we set out as a group to the restaurant, then...well...
I also remembered a group meal we had on the Best of Paris tour that was near the hotel in the Montparnasse area. It is a seafood restaurant called Aux Iles Marquises. It was very small and we needed to eat early to accommodate our group as we took up almost the whole cafe.
When booking ahead for a group of that size, you should be able to set a price in advance for a menu that would offer your diners a few choices. More casual restaurants can be larger, such as I think the Alsatian Brasserie de l'Ile St. Louis would be large enough.
I once took a group that was about that size (reserved in advance) to the Petit Bofinger, just across the street from the "real" Bofinger at Bastille. That's been a few years now but you might want to check it out. It's not somewhere I would take my parents when they are visiting, but it was fine when I needed a place for a big group, everyone was quite happy with it.
The Jazzy Jazz restaurant and Brasserie could accommodate that many people if notified in advance. See: https://www.facebook.com/JAZZ-Y-JAZZ-142398845952436/
A second choice, if notified in advance is Chartier. See: http://www.bouillon-chartier.com/en/
Reserve for an early hour, and be there on time or a bit early. They get really busy in the evenings.
From the restaurant's point of view, seating capacity is not the only issue with a large group. Preparing the meals to feed 19 people all at the same time puts enormous pressure on the kitchen staff. An advance reservation is better for everyone.
Our group meals last June were at Le Campanille (boeuf bourguignon), Le Bosquet (escargot, duck confit, etc.), and Pasco (best of the bunch -- perfect salmon, Normandy steak, creme brulee, good wine). None of these were high-end eateries, but the food was fine and all were within easy walking distance of the Ecole Militaire Metro stop and our hotel, the de Londres Eiffel.
Jeannie, I recommend an old standby of mine, Le Chartier, Mo: Grands Boulevards. It is touristy but are adept at handling large groups. I think it is a fun restaurant that is very French (orders and l'addition are written on the paper tablecloths) and the prices can't be beat! They don't take reservations so try to arrive by 5 pm to avoid long lines. Check it out: www.bouillon-chartier.com/en.
Enjoy!
