Paris During the Olympics Itinerary Suggestions Needed

Hi All!

Me and my boyfriend will be in Europe for our very first time this summer for a wedding in Greece, and we happen to be in Europe during the Paris Olympics. We decided we didnt want to miss out on this amazing opportunity so we purchased a ticket to an event and will be visiting while visiting Paris for 5 days and 4 nights following Greece. We would love help filling our itinerary for the other days. Here is our plan (keep in mind our Olympics tickets are for day 3 which is a Sunday): Day 1 get into Paris around 4pm, we are staying in Saint Germain, any recommendations for close by food and sights would be great, we will be taking it slow this afternoon/evening. Day 2, Big day of sightseeing, we are thinking Palace of Versailles this day as we originally planned it for Day 4 on Monday but it wont be open on Mondays according to the website. We are thinking Palace of Versailles in the morning and coming back for dinner and walking around. Day 3 will be a full day dedicated to going to see the Olympics. Day 4 Sight Seeing around Paris, the lourve (need suggestions on places to see) and ending the night at a late Moulin Rouge performance. Day 5 will be a short day since we will be taking a train to london (any travel recommendations for the train to london would be so appreciated) Please let us know if we are missing any must do's, and if you have any suggestions on how to fill our sightseeing days! Thank you!!

Since this is your first trip I would skip Versailles for another trip. There’s a lot to see in Paris and you aren’t really going to give yourself much time to actually see Paris. I would recommend maybe doing Saint Chapelle, which is a not to be missed in my experience, and some of the historic sections of Paris on day two instead of trucking back out to Versailles

I would strongly recommend getting a guidebook and reading up on the things to see in Paris before you plan a day trip to Versailles.

Since this is your first trip to Europe and you only really have three full days in Paris (not four), and one of those days is for the Olympics (leaving only two days), I would recommend against going to Versailles. There is so much to do and see in Paris proper that you will easily fill those two days. Hell, The Lourve is most of a day. Plan to return some day.

As heretical as this might seem, I would recommend against a visit to the Louvre for your first brief visit to Paris. I love Paris, its art and its art museums, but the Louvre was one of my least satisfying Paris museum experiences. Mostly because of the crowds and enormity of the museum. Mona is lovely of course, but everyone wants to see her. On the other hand, you could go to a wing of the museum that is less crowded.

I hope I'm not taking the wind out of your sails. Many feel they are supposed to go to the Louvre, but are then disappointed for many of the reasons (or perhaps others) that I described above.

If you are determined to see either Versailles or the Louvre, go to the Louvre. At least it's in central Paris.

And the museums in Paris during the Olympics will be mobbed.

. People are going to the Olympics for the games. I’ve been to other cities during Olympics and talked to people who live in them. Some of your other attractions are not as full as they normally are.

Additionally, the Louvre has an entry limit and the entry limit is not going up for the Olympics and it’s generally at that limit most days in the summer so it’s not going to be dramatically more crowded than it would be on the same day in 2023 or 2025

Ekla5,
As lynne with an e suggests, with your limited time in Paris, I would skip the Louvre. Visit the Musee d'Orsay, the Cluny, the Carnavalet, the Rodin Museum....there are any number of museums to see that are not as massive. Take in one or two, visit St. Chapelle, walk around the Eiffel Tower and the Pont Alexandre III bridge, visit the Opera Garnier (beautiful rococo!) and one of the iconic dept. stores nearby, stroll along the Seine by the bouquinistes, look at Notre Dame, take a river ride at Vedettes de Pont Neuf, picnic in Luxembourg Gardens as you sit on a bench watching kids and their sailboats, stop in one of the beautiful churches (take your pick!), buy a crepe from a sidewalk vendor.....so much to do to fill in your two fully free days.
I have just touched the tip of the iceberg for ways to enjoy the City of (en)Light(enment). Gosh, I am jealous!
I believe I mentioned a couple of St. Germain area cafes in another post, but just in case...Breizh Cafe, St. Germain location, and Cafe Mucha, in St. Germain. Also, the museum cafe at the Rodin Museum. (Rodin Museum is near to the Eiffel Tower, the Invalides, Napoleon's Tomb, Pont Alexandre III bridge.) These three cafes were all reasonably priced.
Bonne chance!
