Paris/Dijon Trip Report Apr 2026

My wife and I just got back from a wonderful trip to Paris and Dijon. We absolutely loved both Paris and Dijon and cannot wait till we return to France! We stayed at the Relais Christine in Paris and Hotel Cloche in Dijon. Next time we plan to go Normandy.

Whilst in Paris, we visited the Musee D'Orsay, Rodin Museum, Luxembourg Gardens, Notre Dame Cathedral, Saint Germain de Pres Cathedral, and did a boat tour along the Seine. Our last day in Paris we went to a violin concert at Saint Germain de Pres and did a food tour, sampling butter croissants, baguettes, various cheeses, chocolate, and wine. We also had a lot of unstructured time for exploring and strolling through the neighborhoods around our hotel.

In Dijon we visited the cathedral in medieval Dijon and strolled around the medieval quarter. We also visited the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Dijon, which was fantastic! We also did a day-long wine tasting/tour with Collete Barbier and visited Beaune, Nuits-Saint-Georges, and other small villages in Burgundy.

My wife and I both started learning French last July and it was extremely useful. My French is still not great, but by the time we left Paris I started developing an ear for French and understanding much more.

Transportation:
Direct flight on Air France from IAD to CDG. Passport control/security at CDG was a breeze. Customs/passport control leaving CDG was chaotic and somewhat disorganized; but the CDG staff were awesome. We did not go thru EES entering/departing CDG Terminal 2E.

Took taxis and Bolts around Paris. We took TGV to/from Dijon from Gare de Lyon. We also walked a lot.

Practicalities:
90% of our purchases were with credit card. I had 200 euros on hand just in case, and used 65 e taking taxi from CDG because I had a brainfart with my credit card PIN and just resorted to cash. Donated 20 e at Notre Dame de Dijon and tipped 10 e to our driver from Relais Christine to CDG 2E.

For souvenirs we took a ton of pictures and pamphlets for all the museums we went to, plus our wine tasting adventure with Colette.

Restaurants:
Paris: La Petite Chaise, Pierre Herme (Gare de Lyon), Viandas de Salamanca, Comptoirs Les Deux Magots, Brasserie Vagenende, Allard, Malongo, le Calife dinner cruise, le Societe.
Dijon: Le Jardins, Parapluie, Ermitage de Corton.

The food was exceptional, we really loved pigeon and got to try calf brains, which was alright but a fun experience! France was magnificent, the food was great, and the people were generally friendly and warm.

Thanks so much for your TR! It sounds like you all had a wonderful time!

I'm glad you posted your experience at CGD in 2E with EES. It seems pretty random right now as to when they are using it and when not.

Also good to know about your cash usage, lol. And yes, sometimes my brain just drains too!

You'll enjoy Normandie....it's excellent! Give yourselves some time there.

Thanks for the trip report, always happy to read about Paris. I admire your pursuit of the language too. I’m sure that is appreciated when you use it. How much time did you spend in Dijon? Sounds like another great cathedral to visit.

We were in Bretagne Feb-March. My wife speaks French (she taught it) and I mostly do not. Of course, my personal professor was always coaching me. I'm sure my French improved. I could follow simple conversations. What I found funny is that, over and over, I would say "Bonjour", and the reply would be in English. Something about my pronunciation was a complete tip-off as to my US status.

I did find, as did the OP, that the French people are warm, friendly, and helpful. It probably helps to at least try to speak French. I never, not even 1 time, got dumped on for being a US citizen. I freely admitted that I voted for Mr. Trump.

@Pam: Thank you, I appreciate it! Yeah, we both loved France and can't wait to return. I'm also very glad EES wasn't used when we left CDG because it was already quite chaotic and would've added stress and time. Hopefully the glitches and issues with EES get resolved quickly in the next couple weeks/months.

Our server on the le Calife dinner cruise was from Normandie and told us about places to visit around his hometown, Granville, plus Normandie is a part of France I've long wanted to go, so an added incentive from a French person!

@Judy: Thank you!

@Lyndash: Thank you! Learning French absolutely came in handy, I'd say over 90% of the people we interacted with appreciated our attempts to speak French, a few were rude, and some just responded in English; but in general everyone we met were cool with our attempts speaking French.

It helps that I have a knack and love for language acquisition, and everything that goes with learning a new language.....history, culture, cuisine, traditions, weather, etc. I was fluent in Portuguese as a child, and am conversant in Spanish and Arabic, have limited language skills in Icelandic, and am currently learning Finnish. I've also studied Farsi, but can't really speak it. My biggest issue with French, besides having limited experience with it, was that my brain kept going to Spanish!

We were only in Dijon for two days, and one of the days was spent with Collete touring the wines/villages in the area, so we didn't get to spend a lot of time in Dijon proper. It is a city we need to get back to, as we loved what little we saw of Dijon.

@Paul-of-the-Frozen-North: How did you like Bretagne? That sounds like an awesome part of France to visit! Since Bretagne has significant Celtic heritage did you see bagpipes there? We saw/heard bagpipes in Galicia, which is also a Celtic-heritage region, and figured Bretagne would be similar.

I think the majority of people, regardless of where you go, are good about separating people from a particular country and that country's government/leadership. I've had zero issues being an American in Jordan, Iceland, Spain, France, the UK, or Canada; regardless of who/what party is in power in the US or those countries. Just be respectful and polite and you'll be good ¯(ツ)/¯

@jeanm: Thank you! Paris was awesome, our trip was just way too short, I'd live in Paris in a heartbeat!

The wine tour in Burgundy was wonderful, and Collete was an amazing host and tour guide! I got to try some wines I enjoyed in Burgundy and Paris, as I'm more into beer, pastis, absinthe, and spirits in general; but the wines we tried were fantastic! My wife loved the wines!
