There are two free options for audio guides at the Palace of Versailles: the free guide on the Palace of Versailles app or the Rick Steves audio guide. Which do you recommend?

The official. Absolutely.
RS - when I tried to use it, 3 years ago, was audio only and the crowds made using it a challenge since you could not proceed as quickly through the crowded palace as the audio tried to lead you.
The Official puts up visuals (photos) on your phone, a map, a room by room process and you can easily move around, jump rooms, proceed to whatever part of the palace and grounds you choose. The official has more hours of audio guide on it, to more places in and around the palace, than you can cover in a day, perhaps even two.
Download it BEFORE you go. Spend at least 30 to 60 minutes with it before you enter the palace.
