Overnight to Chartres from Paris

Hi, my husband and I will be tacking four days on to a business trip in Germany and want to spend two days in Paris (where we've both been before) and an overnight in Chartres, where I've never been. Does it make more sense to drive or take a train? Any recommendations for a charming lodging in Chartres or nearby, vs a chain hotel?
Thanks!

Travel time by either means is going to be within minutes of the same. A car will cost close to fifty bucks a day plus gas and about thirty bucks a day for parking. A train ticket will be close to twenty per person each way.

Driving back in to Paris and trying to hit a spot can be a pain in the tail, but getting out is fairly easy. If you're going to dump the car at an airport and leave from there, it won't be a problem.

Chartres trains leave from Gare Montparnasse, so you'll have to figure that into your calculations for each end of the major journey.

Chartres isn't the easiest place to drive in the area around the cathedral.

All in all, with a bunch of unknowns the train would probably be the winner unless you're going to include something other than Chartres or have tons of junk to move.

I visited Chartres as a daytrip, wish I had spent more time there. The train station is a very short walk from the catherdral, easy to get around on foot.

Chartres is an easy day trip from Paris, frequent trains from Gare Montparnasse, about an hour's ride as I recall. A few blocks from the station to the cathedral. An overnight would be icing on the cake, sorry I don't know any places.

No need to drive if you just need to get to/from Chartres. Train is easiest and costs 15 euros each way, per person.

We stayed in the Timhotel Chartres Cathedral with a view of the cathedral and walking distance to train and Cathedral. Lovely city.......wished we spent more time.....if your going late June....the Cathedral is illuminated with a moving light show and music and many of the streets in old town are illuminated...very magical!
