Looking for a town we can stay the night on our trip from the D Day beaches to the Dordogne Valley. Thanks!
Are you driving or taking the train?
Driving. It is about a 7 hour drive and we would like to break it up.
Just looking at ViaMichelin's fastest suggested route, I see Le Mans, Tours, Chauvigny and Limoges. Chauvigny is picturesque and probably small enough that you won't lose a lot of time dealing with traffic; Limoges is larger and has some good decorative-art museums in addition to a very nice medieval district. The Oradour-sur-Glane memorial site/museum is not far from Limoges. Poitiers is also nice (hill alert), but it's probably about 20-25 miles off your route (west of Chauvigny).
Incidentally, ViaMichelin estimates the driving time at 8 hr. 1 min.
Thank you! I need to check Michelin out.
I would stay around Tours and check out a chateau in the Loire.
If driving, then I would go to one of the Loire Valley towns - Amboise, Chinon, Azay le Rideau, etc.
We drove from MSM - stayed 2 nights in Amboise at Hotel Bellevue. Not quite halfway to Domme, but it would be easy and enjoyable. Parking was right across the street, exit the back door of hotel and you're steps from the center and entrance to Amboise Chateau. If you only have 1 night and are interested in a chateau visit without any extra driving then Amboise works. (IIRC there was a RS tour checking in the day we left Belvedere)
From there we drove to Sarlat- stopped at Oradour-sur-Glane on the way. Worthwhile, memorable stop.
This is great. Thank you
