Overlord Group Tours

My Husband and I are interested in a tour with Overlord. My husband has difficulty walking and I am wondering what the pace of their tours are. We just got back from Italy and he had a difficult time keeping up on our tour of the Colosseum, Palatine Hill and the forum.
The day the two of us walked from the Ghetto to the Pantheon he was able to manage since we could go at a slower pace.

We won't be renting a car, instead, we will be taking the train from Paris to Bayeux. One tour guide that I saw on this forum gives private tours, but without a car, she is quite expensive. I would like to keep the price around $250 Euros.

Thank you for your help

One point to consider with any of the group tours is that in addition to the walking, you'll be climbing in and out of the van at each stop. The Overlord Tours website shows a description of the number of sites they visit on each tour. At locations such as the American cemetery, some walking would be required but it's mostly level as I recall. At those places, you could perhaps remain closer to the bus rather than walking about with the group, or find a bench where your husband can sit down.

It would help to know which of the Overlord tours you're considering?

I was thinking about TOUR #2FS Omaha / Utah – Full Day Tour or TOUR #1 Omaha – Half Day Tour

I took one of the Overlord full-day tours in 2017. I wish I had a better memory for how things played out. We would stop at a point where the van could park then walk to the point of interest. The group members didn't walk at the same pace and some paused to take pictures, so we sort of straggled over to the place we were heading for. The driver/guide sometimes gave part of his explanation while we were very near the van and part of it later. Some of the walks were very short; some were longer. At least one was over bare ground rather than paved paths and did involve a good bit of walking away from the van. However, this is not at all like a 2-hour walking tour you might take in a city. You are being driven from point to point and do not spend a great deal of time at any location except for the lunch break at St-Mere-Eglise, and most of the time there you are on your own to grab something to eat and visit the Airborne Museum.

Incidentally, I strongly suggest that you just take something with you so you can use most of the time to see the Airborne Museum. Even if you just buy a carry-out sandwich (the driver will point out a place where you can do that), that will take 5-10 minutes you will later wish you could have in the museum. You are not allowed to eat in the van.

I don't think the tour will be too difficult for your husband, but it's possible that he may occasionally miss out on part of the guide's explanation if he is slow to arrive at the target point.

Send a query to Overlord Tours with your questions. I'm sure they will be happy to answer you. I've taken a few of their tours and they are wonderful.
Happy Travels.

I really would recommend a full-day tour, because it takes a fair amount of time to get from Bayeux to the first stopping point. The travel time takes a larger chunk out of a half-day tour.

The company has several different full-day tours. Possibly some involve less walking than others. It is a very good suggestion to contact the company and inquire about what might work best for you.

We just did the Overlord full day tour you describe. The guide picks you up at the Bayeux train station. There was climbing in and out of the van at each stop, but your husband would probably be allowed to ride in the front passenger seat to make it easier for him. You will have a short walk from each parking spot to the area where the guide speaks, then you typically have 10-20 minutes to browse the area on your own, such as the beach landing sites. At the cemetery, there is seating in the main memorial area if he does not want to walk to the gravesites. All of the area is visible from the memorial. Like the others suggested, I would get in touch with them to see if they might have a wheelchair to borrow or if they might be able to adjust the guide's speaking spots so that there will be less walking for your husband. At lunch, I'm sure if you ask, the guide could drop you off right at a restaurant prior to parking as well. The tour was a highlight of our family's trip and even though the van could hold 12 people there were just 6 total with us included, making it easy to adjust to our interests, so I do hope you are able to go.

Be sure you are clear on the pick-up spot for the specific tour you choose. When I researched the tours in 2017, there was one that picked up at the train station (designed for people staying in Paris who caught an extremely early train to Bayeux); the rest departed from a spot near the center of the town. It's not particularly easy to find that departure point the first time. If you have the opportunity, I'd suggest walking over there the day before so you know where you're going.

Thank you so much for all your advice. I will contact Overlord and it does sound doable for my husband.
