Orly Airport Shooting

In today's world, these things sadly happen. Not a reason to cancel a trip, just a reason to be alert and possibly have contingency plans.

Orly Airport Shooting

And before we get a million questions, yes, France is as safe as almost anyplace in Europe.

And in yesterday's world. People forget that Paris was routinely bombed and shot-up in the 60s, 70s, and 80s.

When I first went to Paris in " yesterday's world" in the summer, July 1973 to be exact, I saw a police paddy wagon parked on the street with at least six policemen sitting inside, rifles stacked up. How do I know? The rear doors of the paddy wagon were open, a few policemen were standing around by the wagon. The fact the paddy wagon was parked in front of a jewelry store might have been the reason for location of reinforced police presence, or coincidental?

It's all over with.
The person who was killed had a criminal record, was probably radicalized while in jail. He started out in a bar in the suburbs, shot up the ceiling, then went to the airport to die for "the cause".
The police are looking through his phone records, have closed-circuit TV records and will conduct a thorough autopsy to see if he was under the influence of drugs or alcohol. The police also plan to gather his friends and relatives for questioning.
The police did an excellent job. The whole thing was over in 3 minutes, and no passengers were harmed.

Well, there are so many people shot in the streets of our cities that it's no more news. It's normal. News would be if nobody was shot. Europeans are not that far yet. So it is big news when somebody is shot or die by explosives or because terrorist truck hit him. So it's in news there and then here and then potential travelers read it or see on TV and then: "Oh my God! somebody was killed in Europe, we should cancel our trip" and they are not realizing that instead of changing more dangerous environment for less dangerous environment, they decided to stay in that more dangerous one.

Unfortunately I suppose this is the reality of the world we live in now. According to the reports I read, he "violently attacked" a female soldier using a pellet gun and tried to steal her assault rifle. Other soldiers fired about six shots to prevent him from harming anyone with the stolen weapon. He wanted to die for the cause, so I guess he got his wish.

Jazz,

"It is strange that the prolific posters here parrot the same or something like "unfortunately this is the world we now live in""

Each of us has a different perspective on this sort of thing.

Jazz can avert his gaze if he doesn't want to see more, and to add to chexbres summary, according to the news on France2 at 8 last night, he first shot and wounded an officer at a traffic stop, drove away, but texted his father and brother that he had just committed a "connerie" (hard to translate--maybe "did something really stupid" or "really blew it" would be the translation). So, a punk radicalized in jail who realized he'd blown it--in one way or another. Therefore, it's difficult to know if this was a planned attack or spur-of-the-moment.

I had a friend who had arrived into Orly yesterday morning. . . They were stuck in the tarmac on a bus they brought out for them for an hour, then were stuck in some kind of safe haven for a few hours while authorities cleared the airport and ensured that the guy didn't have any accomplices.

Authorities weren't preparing for Kate and William's arrival; they were already here on Friday. Anyway the Sentinelle opération is what has been in place for a long time now.

Bets,

It looks like Jazz doesn't want to participate in this thread anymore. H/she has removed the earlier reply which I referenced above. I stand by my earlier comments, but apparently h/she finds it more convenient to remove replies when someone disagrees.
