Oradour-Sur-Glane

Is Oradour-Sur-Glane a place where we would need a tour guide or is it more of a place that would be ok to see on our own?

Also, for those that feel a tour guide would provide a better experience, can you recommend one who is knowledgeable and who speaks English?

Thank you.

We went a long time ago but my recollection is that there was a museum that explained the horror that took place and then the actual village was pretty well signed. We didn't feel a need for a guide. There were a few things you need to know -- the historic context and then the particular events that day which were few and awful. You read ahead and learn that in the museum and then the site itself is pretty clear.

We went a few years ago and did not use a guide. There is plenty of information in the museum and then signage in the town as you wander around. It’s so worth a visit - I’ll never forget walking around there.

I was there a number of years ago. It is quite a somber experience. We had read about it in a RS guide book, but still weren’t prepared for the horror of the site. It has lots of signage in English. No tour guide needed.

To add to what the others have said, we went there in 2022 and a guide was not needed. It’s worth going to because of the history, but it’s difficult to see. I’m glad I went.

We went there and needed no guide. the remain are pretty self explanatory, although it might be worth it to read up on the history before you go Peter
