Opera House - worth a look?

Hi
We will be in Paris for a few days in June. Our second time but it is already feeling like we need longer or another trip to enjoy everything.

I head the Palais Garnier is quite nice. We are a 20 min walk to it. Worth a stop to see?

Anything else close by to enjoy?

An opera would be quite an experience but will have to save that for next time.

Tickets in advance?

Thanks for the help.

To me the most amazing thing was the ceiling by Marc Chagall. I had probably been to Paris 10 times before I visited it so it just depends on whether this sounds interesting to YOU.

Last October I went to an interesting photo exhibition at the nearby Agence France Press, the French Press Agency. They have a small exhibition space but in looking at their website I don't see that they are planning another exhibition soon.

The Opera Garnier is not really very far from the Tuileries, Place Vendome, Hotel de la Marine, Place de la Concorde.

I hear the Palais Garnier is quite nice.

That is a bit of an understatement - "opulent" and "spectacular" are more accurate. Try to book a tour.

vegaschristmas,
Definitely go see the Opera Garnier. And take a tour if they have the "backstage" tour available. Also, it is a short walk to Galeries Lafayette department store with its fantastic ceiling. You can go to the roof and have a nice view of Paris from there as well. And "quite nice" is an understatement for the Opera house!

It's worth a visit even if you can't book a tour. If you try to imagine a highly ornamented public space with grand features the building will put whatever you imagined to shame.

And, while you're in the neighborhood, a short walk away is a Galeries Lafayette department store with its large glass dome and great view of that part of Paris from the rooftop.

I highly recommend it. Was there in 2019 and was suffering from a bad back so we scaled down our weekend trip significantly to mostly eating, people watching and one major attraction and that was the Palais Garnier. It was fabulous. Absolutely beautiful and the self guided tour with headphones was great.

Great hear that the self guided tour was good. Someone said to try to do a backstage tour. What is that?

Take the evening tour. It was wonderful, not too late, and empty of others. When we went inside to meet our guide we saw three different groups, 3 different languages. We never saw the other groups again till the end. Their hall of mirrors was magnificent as was the Chagall ceiling.
I would take the tour again if Paris was on my agenda.

I enjoyed the Opera Garnier, but the one downside was the smell - it seemed that a lot of people had treated it as an outhouse (and this was inside, not outside). If this has not been remedied (it was years ago), I recommend bringing a handkerchief soaked in lavender oil of some such. Otherwise it was wonderful. Peter
