One Week Flying into Paris

My husband and I are thinking of spending a week (6, maybe 7 nights) in France in May, flying into and out of Paris. We will plan to spend maybe 2-3 nights in Paris and would like to spend the rest somewhere with a more rural setting. I know we could easily spend the whole week in Paris but we'd like to split up our time. We will be traveling by train and are trying to decide where we might want to spend the rest of our time. Some of the places we are considering are the Loire Valley, Burgundy or Provence. We've spent a fair bit of time in Burgundy and Alsace before but haven't explored anywhere else in France. For this trip, we want a place where we can slow down a bit, walk, explore small towns, drink coffee in a cafe. We don't need a lot of night life, museums, etc.

I would love to hear what other thoughts and ideas people might have for our extra time.

Wherever you pick, do that first so you end the trip in Paris and don't waste your second to last day in a very tight time to getting back to Paris to fly home. The Loire is nearby and so might be a good choice. Fly in/ take an early afternoon train to Tours and then spend a couple of days visiting chateaux.

I agree with janet.. I would choose Loire Valley. basing in Amboise myself.. trains are only about an hour and run frequently back and forth to paris.

Provence is probably too far in travel time, given your # of nights and the required trip back. So you may want to take it off your list. And you've already spent time in Burgundy.
That gets your 3 choices down to one: the Loire Valley.
Having a car in the Loire Valley is a plus (picked up on your way out of Paris, such as the airport)--because on your tight itinerary, the car will give you maximum flexibility to see the chateaus, most (but not all) of which are in the country, where the rail lines don't run.
If you don't have a car, you'll take the trains and then need to plan for transport to the chateaus/other sights you want to see that are in the country away from the train stations.

Provence. Since you are already arriving at CDG it makes sense to fly to Avignon or Nice. You could get there faster than a train to the Loire. Tgv back to paris.
