One way car rental from France to Italy?

Would like to fly to Paris, rent a car and drive to Orvieto Italy and leave car there.
Fly home from Rome or someplace conveient to Orvieto.
It seems very expensive to do so due to one way fees. Have made trip into Italy several times before from France and drove back into France to avoid the excessive fees. Would like to do this trip again but fly out of Italy home.
Any ideas as to best way to have car in both countries or should I just drive back into France as I have done before?
Thanks.

I don't know this from direct experience, but would it be feasible and economical for the OP to rent a car from Paris to, say, Nice, take a train or bus to, say, Genoa, then rent another car for the leg to Orvieto?

I assume you're driving in order to make several small-town stops along the way, right? What's the rest of the route?

If your plan is to go via the Mediterranean coast near Nice (where you can easily spend a few car-less days), then San Remo is a smaller town and closer to the border (versus Genova) where you can pick up an Italian rental car.

Coming through the mountains, you might drop a car in Chamonix and take a bus from there to Aosta, or in good weather, take the lifts all the way over Mont Blanc.

The one way fee costs more than driving back, including tolls, gas and one night lodging. Return the car at Ferney Voltaire, the French-side of the Geneva airport.

We plan circular routes and enjoy the sometimes-long return drive.
