One Night in ... Strasbourg or Colmar?

If you were spending just one night in either city, would you spend it in Strasbourg or Colmar? Arriving mid-afternoon, renting a car the next morning and heading to Burgundy.

A couple factors: We’re arriving from Paris via TGV, and need to go through Strasbourg station regardless. Also, I’m sort-of limping around right now (*), so long walks will be out of the question (I’m doing this trip as a favor to my travel companion, who has never been to NE France).

I’m currently thinking of staying in Colmar (we currently have a hotel at Colombier Suites and a car rental the next morning, but both can be changed).

Much obliged if anyone has any input!

Kind regards,
Don

(*) Speaking of which, will a 10-minute train connection in Strasbourg be enough time for someone who’s pretty much limping at 2mph right now?

Given all that you have written I would choose Colmar. There is a train every 30 minutes from Strasbourg to Colmar, so if you miss your connection, you can catch the next one. You will have to taxi to your hotel in Colmar because the station is about a 15 minute walk to your hotel. The area in Colmar around your hotel is very nice for the evening. Depending on where you are renting a car the next day, you may have to taxi again. Enjoy.

With less than a full day to visit, either works. Heading to Burgandy afterwards, I’d lean towards Colmar.

Hey you two, I just wanted to say thank you (“Thank you!”) .

Based on your replies (and I didn’t know about the 30-minute local), I’m going to stick with the plan and go to Colmar, and rent the car the next day (it’s Enterprise, and yes, I’ll be taking two taxis for sure). Thanks again!

Glad you got some answers Don! I didn't give my opinion which was also to go to Colmar because I am someone who strongly prefers small towns over cities and Strassbourg feels miuch more like a city to me. I think you made a good choice!

As an FYI, Colmar has a free shuttle bus service called the navette. It makes rounds around town starting and ending in front of the train station. For part of the circuit riders can hop on and off. It has a stop by Petite Venise very near your hotel.

I've been to both, twice. I vote for Colmar, as it has a compact walkable town center, and is nearer to the wine villages. Strasbourg has a famous cathedral if that's your thing.
