We will be flying out of Charles de Gaulle for our return flight to the USA. We will arrive by train in the early afternoon and then need to be at the airport by 9:25 the next morning. Should we stay in Paris (which part?) and take a taxi in the morning or stay close to the airport. We have been to Paris before.
If it were me, I'd stay in the city. Have a nice dinner and a stroll and even perhaps have some time to do something you've not done in Paris before dinner.
If you're comfortable using the RER to the airport, you could stay somewhere along the route and take the train to the airport in the morning. I always recommend the Henri IV RIve Gauche on the r. St. Jacques. It's a 3-in walk to the RER station at St. Michel.

If you'd rather take a taxi, you can stay anywhere in the city, although if you stay in the northeast quadrant (think Marais or Bastille areas) your taxi will be able to avoid a lot of morning traffic. A taxi from the Right Bank will be €56 plus a reservation fee of €7. You can download the G7 app or call them on the English-speaking line at 01 41 27 66 99. The important bit is to make sure to reserve your taxi 2 days prior. There can be a shortage of taxis, so no availability, at the moment.
IF you decide to stay at the airport, then stay AT the airport, not close to the airport.
In April I stay at the Novotel CDG. A two minute covered walk from the RER B station and a 2 minute covered walk to the Roissypole tram to the terminals. It was clean, quiet and comfortable with a nice breakfast buffet.
That's a tough one because spending the afternoon/evening at the airport is just depressing when Paris is that close :)
If you do stay at the airport make sure it's on the CDG Val line
Here are my reviews on the airport hotels that i have personally used
Sheraton - Great location and they know it. Overpriced, poor service , rooms need a redo
Hilton - My favorite but generally a little high :)
Holiday Inn Express - Easy commute on the CDG Val and good price. Room was in good location and it's close to other hotels so you have a couple of food options.
Good Luck
If you were arriving late in the evening I would recommend just staying at the airport -- but arriving early afternoon? Drop your luggage at your room in Paris, then enjoy an afternoon doesn't something you enjoy about Paris -- a museum, sitting in the Luxembourg Gardens reading a book, taking a walk in one of the many 'Paris walks' books -- or just strolling by the river. Get a nice dinner and night's sleep. Arrange for a cab on G7 to pick you up at 5:30 the next morning.
Or come into Paris and stow your luggage at Gare du Nord and enjoy the afternoon and dinner and then take the RER B to the airport and go to one of the hotels at Roissypole. We usually stay at the Novotel when we do this. Quiet, clean, decent breakfast and literally steps from the CDG VAL to the terminal.
If you do the second which I would with a 9:25 flight then make sure the luggage storage is open when you want to pick up the bags.
Thank you all for the great input. I think I'm leaning towards staying in the city and scheduling a taxi for the morning drive to the airport. It would be a shame to be so close and not see any of all that Paris has to offer. Carol, you helped me realize that just hanging out at the hotel for the afternoon and evening would be "depressing" Happy, thank you for the information on scheduling the taxi. We have been to Paris multiple times however, I'm at the stage in my travels where I can slow down and just enjoy where I am and not have a list of " must see" places.
Again, thank you for taking time to reply.
we always schedule the G7 taxi for CDG two days ahead; sometimes cars are not available the night before -- they have an English line or you can do it on line. The phone from an American number is: +33 1 41 27 66 99. They are very reliable in my experience.
If you have any interest in aviation history don't go into the city. Get a room at CDG, and take a cab over to La Bourget and visit the French Air and Space Museum. It's excellent, and open until 6pm. Then go have a meal, which if you do it right will last until after 8pm, and get some sleep.
We had the same issue last April after finishing a barge trip in Provence. We ended up getting a room at the Novotel CDG which lets you check in after 12 noon. We arrived at the CDG TGV station at 2pm, dropped off our luggage, took the RER into Paris in time for our reserved time slot at Saint Chappelle. Then we had a dinner Seine cruise on La Calipe, ending with watching the Eiffel Tower light up as we passed. The metro station was close by and the RER took us right back to Novotel CDG where we didn't have to worry about hurrying in the morning.
It was wonderful and changed my husband's mind about spending time in a big city. Now we're planning 11 days in Paris this fall.
Thank you for taking the time to give replies. Since I'm leaning towards staying in the city, my next hurdle is deciding which Hotel and which area? Are there any areas to avoid due to safety concerns? Previously we stayed close to the Eiffel Tower and close to the historic area on the Left Bank. Trying to keep the cost to around $300.
Since you plan to taxi to the airport in the morning, just look for something convenient to your evening plans. Will you be doing an "event" like a concert or a Seine cruise? Do you want to stroll to and from a restaurant?
Get an idea of your plans and check a website like booking.com to get an idea of what's available where in your budget.
Without knowing your dates it's difficult to advise specific hotels.
Be sure to reserve your taxi as soon as you get to Paris, or even the day before that, to be sure of availability when you need it. Don't plan on ordering one for the airport same day, or less than 24 hours in advance.
I am curious about the comments to order a taxi 2 days ahead. I have always just asked the hotel. They always say to ask the front desk clerk the night before. I haven't had any problems doing this.
Has someone not been able to get an early morning taxi?
I say 2 days before, but the day before is okay. If you need an early taxi, though, there might not be one available at the time you need it. The hotel may order it for you or you may order it yourself, but given you need to be at the airport in the morning, and will need an early taxi, it's best not to chance a taxi not being available for a trip to CDG in time for you. Not all taxis go to CDG. It's not like New York City.
Regarding when to order your taxi, when you make your hotel reservation, I would ask about having them arrange a taxi vs ordering a G7 myself a few days before. When we stay in a hotel, we've always simply had them order the taxi--sometimes they've scheduled the taxi the night before, other times @ 30 minutes before. If we're staying in an apartment, we order a G7. I've done it from 2-4 days before needed, but with just one night, you'll be staying in a hotel.
If I'm reading your original post correctly, you need to be at the airport by 9:25, not that your flight is at 9:25. If ordering a G7, I'd play it safe and order it for 8:00 due to rush hour traffic.
I, too, would want to wring out every last second in Paris rather than staying at CDG or nearby. When will you be in Paris? Since you've been before, you know that hotels book up fast even more so since we've been unleashed from the pandemic. We've generally stayed in the 4th or 5th, last time the 2nd and the G7 got us to the airport in 35 minutes, but we scheduled earlier to be on the safe side.
Yes Lindy, we need to be at the airport by 9:25. We are comfortable using public transportation but like to use a taxi to the airport. Thanks you for the reminder to order the taxi before we arrive in Paris.
We will be there in September.
I think I'm having difficulty finding a decent hotel in my budget because it's just a few months out. I usually book 9-12 months out. We are doing a cruise first and then have 2 weeks on our own afterwards. It's just taking me awhile to put all the pieces together.
This forum has been very helpful in my planning. Thank you again for taking the time to respond.
Yes, it will be tight trying to find a hotel in Paris in September, but it can be done. Most here recommend looking at Booking.com, plugging in all your "wants" and then contacting the hotel directly. It's a great source for filtering. We have booked a room at HÔTEL CARON DE BEAUMARCHAIS for @ $300 per night although there were cheaper choices. Full disclosure, we haven't stayed there but it gets high marks both here and on TripAdvisor. I see that there is a room for 190 Euros still available for mid-September. It also has air conditioning. Keep checking for openings if there are none, as I did, because people cancel.
For comparison, rooms at the airport hotels are quite high, so don't feel too bad that they are high in Paris. If you have to pay a lot, better Paris than CDG!
