One Month in Provence, Single Location Base

Hey Folks,
Kind of a "different" request. My Wife and I are planing on retiring in a couple years, and I want to spend 2 months+ in Europe as a retirement kick-off. The goal is to spend (after spending 1 month in Sicily )1 month in Provence.

The goal is to rent an apartment for a month (I am finding monthly rentals to be a very good bargain), live like a local, base out of 1 major location, and if we want to spend a few nights elsewhere we will. Assuming the above, any suggestions on the "best" place to live like a local for a month? Will plan for having a car a portion of the time- how much depends on what we end up wanting to see, and how train access is for the base.

Thanks!

Glenn

Look at Menerbes, Lourmarin, Lacoste, kand Rousillon. Read Peter Mayles’. “A Year in Provence” if you haven’t.

Avignon seems the most convenient base if you will primarily depend on public transportation. Arles wouldn't be bad. Aix-en-Provence is probably not quite central enough. Most of the other places often mentioned here are rather small and basing in one of them would probably require you to have a car for nearly the entire month. Even St-Remy-de-Provence (population almost 10,000) has no rail service--though it has bus connections to both Avignon and Arles.

Wonderful! We did three months in Cortona, Italy for the same reasons. Learned all about what day which type of garbage went out - who knew!
We have traveled a good bit in Provence and totally agree - do the Mayle trail. BUT those towns are small and I would agree Avignon for a base would be better. St. Remy possibly? If you can, get to Crillon le Brave!
