Flying from Canada to Marseille, with a one-hour connection in Paris CDG… can I make it? My original flight times were changed by Delta, and I didn’t immediately realize how tight the connection became. They say one hour is a legal connection, so I can’t change the second flight to a later time without paying a fee. Should I just hope for the best and hustle at CDG, or cough up more $$ ?
If this is all one ticket Delta is responsible for getting you to Marseille
If you miss the connection they will put you on next flight with availability
While it is true that Delta will put you onto the next flight to Marseilles, it might be worth a call back to Delta. Delta phone agents are some of the most helpful reps I’ve ever dealt with. They listen and they’re empowered to make exception decisions on their own for many matters.
Call back, tell them how long your original connection was, and ask for a longer connection.
You have nothing to lose and I feel like they might allow this based on my HUGE variety of accommodations/changes I have made with Delta over the years.
What I find on the Delta site is flights that are on Air France planes. It looks like there are 2 more flights after the 1 hr connection, so you should get there the same day, should you not make the 1 hr connection. Presumably AF knows what they are doing or wouldn't sell such a schedule.
In light of these regulations:
https://europa.eu/youreurope/citizens/travel/passenger-rights/air/index_en.htm
You would be entitled to monetary compensation id you are more than 3 hrs late in getting to your destination.
I wouldn't cough up more $$; if they will give you the 2hr 10 min connection, I would do that so as not to be stressed and in a frantic mad dash.
Assumes you have a single ticket
This is very much a situation where the "Hang up and call again" strategy is in order. If the first agent wasn't able to change flight #2, the second agent might be more helpful. I would do that, because 1 hour is a mad dash, and your checked luggage might not make it either.
Don't worry about it. There are lots of nonstops from Paris to Marseille (almost every hour), so you'd just catch the next one. Plus Delta would possibly owe you a penalty award for getting you to your destination later.
Boy this is a stinker. Pretty good odds you wont make the connection. Improve the odds by getting a seat as far forward as possible. The minute you land check your phone for the new gate number. Do remember you have to go through immigration and the next flight probalbly boards 45 minutes before flight time (maybe 30 minutes if you are lucky). I would fight like the dickens not to do this. Especially at ChuckyD. Terrible airport.
In addition to what Mr E said, you will have to go thru security as you change from the 2E gates where the Delta flights arrive to the 2F terminal where your Air France flight to Marseille will depart from. Have all your 3-1-1 liquids in a ziplock bag and be ready to pull them out. IF you have a belt, I'd remove that on the plane and stash it in your personal item. Empty your pockets as well so you will go thru security quickly.
Also look at the AF flights mentioned above and have them available when you call Delta. I think maybe you will have good luck with a live person changing that flight to one that gives you more time with NO extra charge.
IF you miss the connection the AF representatives in 2F will help you with the rebooking.
Also, keep your fingers crossed for a tail wind from Toronto to Paris, lol! You might get in early!
I had a Berlin/CDG/Chicago connection a year ago and Delta changed the first flight to make the connection tighter. I was able to them to change the flight (I had tracked the Berlin/CDG flight and it is often late). We would have missed the connection on many days.
It is worth calling back and getting a different agent.
Also, when I have this happen, I check the available seats left on the next flights. If there’s hardly any seats left on a smaller plane, I will also mention the likely scenario when speaking with an agent. Being bumped to the next flight which is very possible but having no seats left isn’t something you want to deal with on a long travel day.
Thanks for all the helpful comments. I phoned Delta, but it warned of high call volume and a long wait time. So I did an online chat, explained the situation, tried to get my CDG to Marseille flight changed to the one departing about an hour later. After much back and forth, the rep could only make the change for $750 per person (!!!), or otherwise just put us on standby (for free) for that flight. I politely pleaded but no go. I guess it’s a lesson learned, I should have immediately responded to change flights after receiving the email notification from Delta that the schedule changed and the connection was short.
But, online, I could see the option to get the flight change that I wanted, by doing an upgrade to Premium Economy for $300 per person. Bizarre. Anyway, I took that option so I could get peace of mind with a 2h10min connection in CDG, and with more comfort on the flights from Toronto to Marseille.
Glad you came up with a solution that will allow you to relax during your travel day. Hope you enjoy your time in France!
Very clever move, roger, and a great outcome. Have a wonderful trip!
