One day left in Provence- visit Arl or Orange?

One day left in Provence. Staying in Avignon we visited Luberon towns, Nimes, Pont du Gard, Utes. Trying to decide whether to visit ARL or orange and Vaison la Romaine. Looking for best walking and interesting shops to stroll for a leisurely day. Any thoughts of better one day option from Avignon- train or bus- greatly appreciated!

Of the three, I've only been to Arles and I loved it. Great ancient Roman Amphitheater along with another nearby outdoor theater. Some beautiful squares, lovely river views, a fantastic museum of archaeology and very pedestrian friendly. If you're there on market day, which I think is on the ring road, its really special.

Loved Vaison la Romaine but thinking much of that fondness was our beautiful hotel Beffroi. I would pick Arles over Orange but have only been to Orange of the two.

Arles is one of Rick Steves’ “back doors,” a particularly favorite town of his in his guidebook. The archaeological museum is spectacular - I could spend hours looking at the ancient floor mosaics, and a rare Roman boat was extracted from nearby waters and is now on display, with some of its sunken contents. Picasso museum, too. Not a bad day trip from Avignon, by any means.

Orange, however, has the ancient theater, still used, where we attended an opera on Bastille Day a few years ago. For walking and window shopping (or just shopping), between the two, I’d pick Orange. Add Vaison to the Orange visit, and you’d have a 2-for-1 best pick.

Hi -- Arles would be my vote. Excellent city to spend a day (or more). If you have a full day there, try to go on a farmer's market day (usually Wed or Sat) -- it's a very nice one.

Our tour included Arles. It was especially meaningful because of my love for everything Van Gogh. In addition to all the historical sites it does have some great shopping opportunities. Great place for a leisurely day. One of my prized souvenirs was a Provence tablecloth and napkins. Our tour guide recommended the shop for the quality and affordable pricing. Our tour group were pleased to help the economy! I always have fond memories when I use the tablecloth.
