My husband, daughter and I have just 2.5 days to see Omaha Beach (his grandfather was there) and MSM. Is this doable cheaply? Are we better off renting a car from a small town? Are we better off choosing?

Yes, I would say it is doable. Renting a car would be your best option. It will take most of your half day to drive from the beach to MSM. Will you be coming from Paris and does the 2.5 days include traveling from there? Take the train from Paris and pick up the car at one of the towns in Normandy near the D-Day beaches. Reserve ahead before you leave home as it is normally cheaper. If you have to choose, pick the one that is the most meaningful to you.

If you pick up the car in Normandy , do it in Caen , not Bayeux . The rental agents are across the street from Gare de Caen , Bayeux is a distance from the station , and I think only one agency , You can then make the short drive to Bayeux and base there . You will be perfectly positioned to see the beaches and related sites .

Not "cheaply" but we had a wonderful 2.5 days seeing both. We stayed at a lovely Chateau and it included tours to both places. It was amazing. They even picked us up at the train station & took us back and it included all of our meals.
We did this before our BOE tour last summer.
