Old Speeding Ticket in France

We were on a lovely driving vacation to the Loire Valley in France 3 years ago, visiting the beautiful Chateaux and small towns. Then about 2 months after we got home, we received a speeding ticket in the mail from the Government of France. Apparently the one day I was under the weather and my wife was driving, she must have passed one of the automatic traffic cameras in a construction zone and was over the limit. But the ticket was in my name, as I was the one listed on the car rental forms.

We sent in a check in US$ for the ticket (but not the late fee as we didn't get the notice until late in the USA) but our check was never cashed, as far as we can tell. Does anyone know if there is any way to contact the French authorities and see what is up with this ticket? If anyone knows a method of checking, maybe online or by telephone perhaps, that would be most appreciated. Thanks in advance. :-)

AFAIK: there's no consequence for not paying, if that matters to you.
