Offline gps apps

Has anyone used the navmii app to get offline gps route planning for walking as well as driving in France? Thanks

I've never used the navmii app before....but can say that Google Maps offline works pretty well.

I haven't used navmii. I used maps.me on my recent trip to Spain. I downloaded maps when I had wifi and used offline for driving and walking. I advise using it at home before your trip

Another vote for maps.me. You can download maps on your home WiFi - by the simple trick of zooming to the desired area - and then you can view maps and plot routes (by foot or car) when you get there.

Thanks everyone. I have downloaded mapsme.com but I am having a little trouble with it. I am assuming it will always use my location as the starting point, which makes it difficult to “practice” with. I am used to google maps where I can put in a starting and ending address (anywhere in the world) and have them map the route. Is there any way to do that with mapsme? If not, I guess I will just have to practice routing from my house to get an idea of how to use this and hope it is as easy to use once I am in France!

Have you tried Google maps offline ??

This was so simple and worked perfectly on our last drive through France.

You just have to zoom on to the area you will drive/be the next day. While you are sleeping at your B&B with wifi, the map will download and you will be ready to use it EXACTLY like you do in the States - without having any wifi in your car ! It will give you step by step directions just like at home.

I do have the maps.me app but we did not use it.

Thank you Carla. I use google maps all the time at home but have never tried to download maps and use if off line. I will have both apps and hopefully easily use one of them!

Kathy, try Google Maps "offline" at home. Download the area map on WiFi, then put the phone in airplane mode and go for a drive and see how driving navigation works. Won't work for walking directions yet as far as I know, though you can still bring up a map to show where you are while walking around.

Andrew, I just did that and it worked great. I didn’t realize you could get maps offline. I was disappointed that it did not work for walking but I believe mapsme will work for walking so I will take along both :)

Now may I ask (forget if you already did in another thread) why you aren't considering a SIM card so you can use your phone without needing to worry about the offline stuff?

I've heard that "city maps to go" is good and plan to try it this summer in Paris.

I use Co Pilot. I use it at home as well as Europe but like the Europe version better. I download the maps while at home then use it without data. If you miss a turn it will reroute you almost instantly. It navigates to any street address well without ever using data. You need data if you want to search for a sight by name. I don't like it's search function as much as Google Maps. I'll often open Google Maps just to copy down an address, then put it in Co Pilot and go.

I've used Google Maps but find it's a battery and data hog. Because of the rate it goes through my battery, and data, I use it sparingly - generally only to look up an address. If you are navigating with Google Maps and have data turned off, it won't reroute when you miss a turn - until you turn data on. That can be very annoying and, in some cases, unsafe when driving in traffic.

But, if you have downloaded the maps you need from Google maps and saved them offline, it will reroute you even without data or wifi in your vehicle.

We were amazed that we had never tried this and that it worked seamlessly.

Carla is correct. You have to download the "offline" area you are driving in with Google Mas ahead of time - then it can reroute you as needed. I drove for a day in Slovenia with my phone in airplane mode using Google Maps "offline." No data required (though you won't get traffic into that way).
