What is the Oberkampf area of Paris like? There seem to be reasonably priced lodgings out that far. I've read that it's noisy and more for the younger set, but also has lots of good food.

There is good food. Check out ParisByMouth for the 11th and 12th arrondissements.
But you will have to look for the 13-digit registration number on AirBnB.
The area is really noisy...with buses and garbage trucks and people having a good time.

Two summers ago I stayed for a week in a 2nd floor apartment overlooking the Oberkampf Metro station. We did not find it a noisy area.

The area is fine and a good location for convenient access to transportation. A great local Parisian restaurant is Les Petites Papiers at 18 rue Oberkampf. Either get there very early or make reservations. Thierry, the chef/owner is fantastic. Any time I go there, I trust his judgment as what to eat. Last time, my starter was foie gras with fresh pineapple and the best sea bass I’ve ever eaten. Bon appétit!
