Now you can use Apple Wallet to ride public transport in Paris

From the Apple website: https://www.apple.com/newsroom/2024/05/apple-and-ile-de-france-mobilites-introduce-navigo-for-iphone-and-apple-watch/

Customers can add a Navigo card to Apple Wallet and simply tap their iPhone or Apple Watch to ride the metro, train, bus, and more in the Paris region. The card will support Express Mode, meaning that riders can simply hold their iPhone or Apple Watch near a payment reader to pay for their ride, without needing to unlock or wake the device. Express Mode continues to work for up to five hours after an iPhone has run out of battery power.

I thought someone had already posted about this, but I think it's gone, so I thought I would let you know. I'm pretty excited for it.

Thanks Mardee. The same is true for Google Wallet (Samsung Android).

Lindy, I think that the "news" was you can NOW ride public transport in Paris with the apple wallet, as google wallet has been able to do that for a LONG time (and nothing has changed) and they announced that it was coming this month, so now its live! Apple hadn't let Paris do this before, so this is noteworthy, definitely for the Olympics.

There was indeed a very informative thread about this same topic yesterday, written by Kim (thanks isn31c).
It appears to have been deleted, which is a true shame because it contained some very useful info for visitors during the Olympics. Especially on how they can stock up on cheaper t+ tickets now.

Edited to correct the name of the poster who wrote the post.

It was a post by Kim, but looking into her history, the post has indeed vanished.

Kim, it would be great if you wanted to add some of that information here. You know much more about that stuff than I do.

Unfortunately, my iPhone 8 will not run iOS 17—which appears to be required for this feature (it maxes out at iOS 16).

It's too bad the system doesn't just accept contactless payment. The way I understand it is that you still have to buy a Navigo pass and download it to your Apple Wallet, right? From there, it becomes contactless. In London, I used Express Mode on my Apple Watch for all Tfl rides without having to download an Oyster Card.

I am excited about this new ability too, as Paris' Metro ticketing machines have always seemed to me to be antiquated technology. I downloaded the Ile de France Mobilities app and started playing with it in advance of my visit next month. Looks like individual trip tickets can also be purchased and utilized in a contactless fashion, without needing to buy a Navigo pass. I like the idea of pay-as-you-go, in case I don't use the Metro enough to offset the price of a pass--and the upcoming visit is for only a few days. The app also gives bus predictions, updates on delays and overcrowding, and directions to the nearest transit options.
However, I did find out that I can't buy/store two single-trip tickets on the same phone at the same time, which presents a problem for my 6 year-old daughter who is traveling with us--she doesn't have a smartphone of her own.

Do you have to physically buy the card first? I read the article and tried to add it via wallet, but under Transit Card, it offered only systems in the US, China, Japan, and Hong Kong. I am so excited for this; I am going to France again this summer and have been waiting for YEARS for this.

In the search bar on the Transit Card page, type Navigo and it’ll show up.

Not on my phone. I think it is because I am running iOS 16.7.8, which is sadly the latest iOS my iPhone 8 will run.

Thank you!!! This will be very helpful for our upcoming trip. Although I still have my old Navigo card in a travel drawer, lol.

I have already bought the blue Navigo pass for the Olympics and the card was delivered to me in the mail. Is there a way to transfer it to my I-phone or should I expect to just use that physical card when I am there?

Does your physical Navigo Pass have a QR code on it? If so, you might be able to add it Apple Wallet that way.

Do you have to physically buy the card first?

Navigo fares may be loaded onto either the appropriate Navigo card or a properly configured smartphone using the Ile de France Mobilité app.

Does your physical Navigo Pass have a QR code on it?

No. For Apple or Android products, download and configure the Île de France Mobilité app.

The way I understand it is that you still have to buy a Navigo pass and download it to your Apple Wallet, right?

You purchase the appropriate fare: Navigo pass, tickets t+, or airport bus tickets and load it to your iPhone/watch via the app. Note that RER/Transilien train tickets are sold in paper format only.

It's too bad the system doesn't just accept contactless payment

Contactless payments are payer specific. The Ile de France transportation network has a number of fare structures, users are qualified by the Navigo card credentials they posses. Contactless payments also add needless expense to operating the transportation network and only a small portion of users would benefit.

which presents a problem for my 6 year-old daughter who is traveling with us--she doesn't have a smartphone of her own.

Each user must have his own ticket/Navigo card/smartphone.

I have already bought the blue Navigo pass for the Olympics and the card was delivered to me in the mail. Is there a way to transfer it to my I-phone

The only pass being sent through the mail currently is the Passe Paris 2024, which is not a Navigo pass, but a pass used specifically for and during the Olympic Games. Navigo passes are not mailed. The Passe Paris 2024 is an electronic pass, loaded onto a Navigo Easy card. Theoretically, the Passe Paris 2024 can be loaded onto the app, but I am not sure how you could transfer it from the card you have to the app.
