My husband and I will be staying in Paris in early/mid November with our 11 and 9 year old daughters. We were thinking of staying in the Rue Cler or Luxembourg Garden area, but also want to be near easy transportation and sites (Eiffel tower, Lourve, Orsay, doc). We're staying 5 days. We'd rather avoid wilder night life areas. Do you have recommendations?
Just a brief reply and I would highly recommend the Rue Cler area. The area is very close to all the main attractions you have mentioned and Rue Cler is a pedestrian street.
Hi Lorri, I like the area around Rue Cler too. It's a very pretty, safe, and within walking distance to all the sites you mentioned. Also near the Invalides and Rodin Museum. Lots of choices for cafes and restaurants. We stayed in the 7th arr the past two years and loved being able to have dinner and walk over to see the ET illuminated. We stayed at the Londres Eiffel and L'Empereur and highly recommend both. Check the RS Paris book for more info on these hotels and many others in the area. Hope you have a wonderful time in Paris!
lorri, do you have a per night budget in mind that's comfortable? That will help people make more specific recommendations. Luxembourg is more central to the key sights.
We're hoping for under 200 Euros a night. And we'd prefer to stay in just one room, not have to get 2 rooms.
You might search the Paris forum of Trip Advisor as someone over there publishes a list of quad rooms occasionally. THey are not all that easy to come by in Paris. I believe that Hotel des Grande Ecoles in the 5th has one at least and it is an excellent location. It has a lovely garden but that is less an issue in November which tends to be a grim and rainy month.
I really disagree with Rue Cler as a good area for a first visit. It is not very central IMHO and you would be better off closer to Notre Dame and the river in the 4th, 5th or 6th. The Eiffel Tower is not central and anything convenient to that is going to be inconvenient for everything else. It isn't a terrible area but I'd go more central. Luxembourg Gardens in summer would be great fun for kids the age of yours but less an advantage in November. Being central though is very important with only 5 nights, 4 full days in Paris. It is great to be able to walk to the Louvre and Orsay and along the river at night with the Cathedral all lit up.
Be sure to have warm rain gear so you can enjoy some of the beauty of the out of doors in Paris in November.
Thanks everyone! We were able to get a room at Hotel des Grandes Ecoles. Its description in the RS book on Paris make it sound lovely, and the price is right. Can't wait!
I think you made a good choice! Much better area too!
