For anyone visiting Paris, thanks to forum poster SharYn, I saw the original statues that were placed on the spire which are currently on display at the Architecture Museum. They’d been removed for cleaning and restoration so were saved from the fire. It’s pretty amazing to see them up close and as Sharyn said, truly a once in a lifetime view. You can even see the crumpled rooster that was atop the spire and was found on the floor of the cathedral following the fire.

National Geographic did Notre Dame, and its restoration, as its featured cover story a couple of issues ago. Fascinating article with amazing photos and graphics. Check it out at your local library!
Not sure if they're still running it, but there's a documentary not available in the US that I saw on my AF flight to CDG in October, was REALLY good, got into the lead contamination, etc.
