Notre Dame: Tower visits to resume summer 2025

Press is now reporting information on another element of the re-opening of Notre Dame: the towers !

Here's something I didn’t know . While the State hands back operating of most of the church itself to church authorities (even for tourist visits), the French State (through its Centre des Monuments Nationaux, National Monuments Center) retains for itself the operating and tourist visits of the north and south towers.

The work to finish the towers is still ongoing, so they won't re-open to paying visitors until summer 2025.

They haven't yet set the price — before the fire, a ticket to climb the towers was 11€. They will increase the prices but haven't yet decided by how much.

Before the fire, about 400,000 people each year visited the towers.

They are also slightly modifying the visit, although it will still include the 422 steps up a narrow spiral staircase, but there will be additional intermediate landings. There will be a new staircase that will allow visitors to get closer to the huge Marie and Emmanuel bells. And visitors will be able to walk on the gallery between the north and south towers — and see the huge wood frame of the roof , thanks to new windows opening back that way.

And the view of the gargoyles and of Paris from 226 feet in the air will remain !

Information taken from an article in Le Parisien of December 22.

Thanks Kim. That's an enticing description of the tower visit --I'll have to plan a visit again in the fall just to see the wood frame of the roof! I'll be in Paris in just a week. Hoping to get tickets inside.

Thanks from me too, Kim. The Towers were a must during our marvelous week in the city some years back; just HAD to shoot my own black-and-whites of chimeras and gargoyles, and the panorama over the city was breathtaking! I'm not sure my knees could take on those steps now but I'm delighted for future travelers with more obliging joints!

Thanks for the update Kim. Our next visit will have to be in 2026 as next year is all booked.

Oh gosh, thank you Kim! You know I have a fear of heights but I might try and make myself do this one especially since they've got extra landings. I'm sure my knees couldn't do the 422 in one fell swoop! I did them on my first few trips to Paris in 1973 and 1974, hahaha.

I love all of Notre Dame of course, but the bell towers specifically are truly my favourite place in the world and I'm very excited for them to reopen!

The direction of the visitor route through the bell towers will be reversed from what it was before the fire. The plan for the new visitor route is:

  • Enter through the south tower (the right side of the cathedral).
  • Visit a room that's newly open to the public on the "first level" (the level between the Gallery of Kings and the Gallery of Chimeras) that will have exhibitions showcasing the cathedral’s history, key dates of its construction, major historical events, etc. The exact details about the exhibition(s) are still TBC.
  • A new wooden staircase is being built that will go from the level of the new exhibition room, to the level of the Gallery of Chimeras. This staircase will be one of the most impressive elements of the restoration in the bell towers! It’s a “double-helix staircase”, which has two separate spirals that intertwine, allowing one side for walking up and the other side for walking down. People going opposite directions won’t run into each other, but can see each other through the middle!
  • Visit the Gallery of Chimeras.
  • Climb inside the south belfry and see the two bells, Emmanuel and Marie.
  • Climb the stairs to the terrace at the very top of the south tower.
  • Climb down to the terrace between the south and north tower (this is new, this area was not open to the public before the fire). There will be a viewing area to see inside the newly rebuilt "Forest", the wooden framework of the roof!
  • Walk over to the north tower.
  • The north tower/the bells in the north tower will be functioning, so this area will likely stay closed to the public. There may be a few things to see at a distance, but that’s still TBC.
  • On the descent, there will be a gift shop. It’s still TBC if the gift shop will remain in the same room it was before the fire, or if it will be moved to a new location.
  • Exit out of the north tower (the left side of the cathedral).

Sainte-Chapelle and the Conciergerie are also managed by the Centre des Monuments Nationaux (or, CMN for short), and the "Ile de la Cité team" within the CMN manages all 3 monuments: The Towers of Notre Dame, Sainte-Chapelle and the Conciergerie.

Thank you emilyofnotredame. You truly are a font of knowledge about Notre Dame. I've visited ND several times but have never climbed the tower. I must return so that I can. I'm bookmarking your posts.

Thanks so much, Kim! Unfortunately, it won’t be in time for my visit, but I’d probably be too afraid to go up there anyway. :-)

You're welcome, and thank you for such a kind compliment! I may be slightly bias, but I absolutely agree that a trip back to Paris and climbing the towers is absolutely worth it. The new changes/additions to the visitor experience is going to be great!!
