Notre Dame de Paris needs an expensive makeover

Article today in the New York Times talks of an urgent need for restoration work on the cathedral we all love. Broken gargoyles and fallen balustrades replaced by plastic pipes and wooden planks ... flying buttresses darkened by pollution and eroded by rainwater ... pinnacles propped up by beams and held together with straps. Everywhere the stone is eroded, and the more the wind blows, the more all of these little pieces keep falling.

To foot the bill — an estimated 150 million euros, or nearly $180 million — the cathedral is hoping to capitalize not only on the architectural patriotism of the French, but also on the francophilia of American donors.

I thought I might appeal to the francophiles in this forum as well. I list the url below so you can go directly to the NYT article if you wish.

I just read the guidelines; where does it say posting a link to a news article is not permitted? I'm not standing up for the New York Times either! LOL

Better late than never, NY Times. Judging by the very similar articles articles by other international news sources in the last couple of months, the French are trying hard to let the world know how badly they need donations.

Notre Dame is OWNED by the French gov't which pays €2 million per year in upkeep. It will now double to €4 million for the next 10 years according to the NYT. It's interesting that a nonprofit group was founded in the US to fundraise private funds for the cathedral as it said that the French people themselves are not making significant donations.

More info from Time magazine which wrote about the problem 4 months before the New York Times did.

Separation of Church and State is important in France.
You may make donations or not, as the case may be.
But the Cathedral of Notre Dame has always been renovated during the centuries.

I am reading a work by Emile Zola, in which he describes the work on Notre Dame as :
"straps, planks of wood, bricks and other desperate measures."

It looks like it will always be so.
I don't think that there is any cause for alarm - or the authorities wouldn't let people access an unsafe building.

There are some churches - Saint-Louis-en-l'Ile comes to mind - which are in dire need of repair. A part of the cross fell off and the clock is covered with netting to protect it.
I would put my money in this beautiful church, where the relics of Saint Louis King of France reside, when they aren't in Notre Dame.
