I plan on touring wineries in the Northern Rhone area, 2-3 days in September. Any suggestions for wineries and/or places to stay?
Try the resources of http://us.rendezvousenfrance.com/en/vineyards-1. Your local library may also have books specifically focused on French wines or winery visits.
We stayed in the northern part of the southern Rhone region; I am not sure if the Chateauneuf du Pape area is the exact region that you are targeting. We stayed in Vaison la Romaine for 4 nights. We explored the Gigondas and Vacqueras region on our own by car. We had a private tour on another day to Chateauneuf du Pape by Celine at levinalabouche.com. it was amazing! We visited 3 vineyards and had lunch on a beautiful terrace overlooking the region. It was one of the high points of our trip. Please respond if you want additional details.

We spent a summer in the Burgundy region and had time to explore the northern Cote du Rhone. Check out the Guigal vineyards: http://www.guigal.com/fr/horaires.php. Also Cave de Tain in warehouse like building has a variety of northern Rhone wines and, at least when we were there, a really nice guy doing the tastings. He was hoping to move to northern California so maybe he is gone. You can also go to Tain L'Hermitage and http://www.guigal.com/fr/horaires.php. Have a great trip.
