North or south of Beaune

After Beaune I have two free nights coming up before I reach Chablis. I was thinking of revisiting Solutre but previous posts make the northern towns (vezelay) sound more attractive.
Is the Macon area worth it? Food, wine and history interest us.

betscw,
Not a place to sleep, but just over an hour NNW of Beaune is Fontenay Abbey. We stopped there on our drive from Chambord to Beaune. Magnificent! The drive from the Abbey to Chablis is about an hour. Worth considering, as is Vezelay.

How about Dijon, home of mustard. I thought the town was charming.

Check out Arbois as an option. A nice change from Burgundy.

Thanks for the Fontenot recommendation. We are traveling from Troyes to Dijon so will definitely stop.

I second Arbois ! Cute town in a beautiful area. Don't miss Arc et Senans, a fascinating visit.

Worth a detour is Guédelon west of Auxerre. It’s the site of an experimental project, building a medieval castle with tools and materials as it was at the time of the Middle Ages from scratch. The location is a bit in the middle of nowhere, so a car and a satnav is needed. Auxerre itself is also a very lovely place to visit.

Please note the name, Fontenay Abbey, not Fontenot, when planning your route.
