Normandy with Kids

Our 3 generation family of 11 will be in Normandy for 4 full days at the end of June. We have rented a house near Cabourg.

First day is a Thursday and 5 of the adults are taking a full day D Day tour which we already booked. The other two adults and 4 kids will hang out at the house and maybe go to the beach nearby.

For Friday, Saturday and Sunday, we would like to spend the days as below. Does anyone have advice on which day to plan each activity?

  1. Mont St Micheal - what is the best day/time? How much time should we plan?
  2. D-Day museums, American Cemetery with everyone. Any recommendations on museums? We read good things about Caen WW2 museum and the Utah Beach Lansing museum.
  3. Quiet day to relax at the house. May check out the Bayeux church and tapestry. Or something else?

Thanks for your help!

Hi Kelly. How old are the kids? Do they have any goals or interests for the trip?

  1. I would expect MSM to be jam packed during the day in June. That might not be so fun with young kids. The best thing is to spend the night, but I wonder if you could plan your day to arrive mid afternoon (when it will still be crowded) and stay late (when it won't).

  2. We liked the Caen museum very much. Others in this community have spoken glowingly of the one in Bayeux, which we have never visited.

3). Bayeux has a lot of charm as well as the cathedral and the tapestry. Is it right for your kids? The tapestry is essentially a big cartoon, but might be boring without some historical context.

Sounds like a great plan, over all!

See the Bayeux Tapestry. You walk along it’s horizontal length listening to audio. Interesting and easy to do.
Mont St-Michel takes a lot of physical effort with all the stairs and steps. How old are the children? After being there, we preferred the view of it from the mainland.

Thanks! Kids will be 3,5,8 & 9. They are all pretty up for most anything but we do want to plan easy flexible days when we can. We can also split up at times if needed.

Heading to MSM in the afternoon makes sense. Good idea!

I'm another fan of the Caen Peace Museum, but it is large, time-consuming (a comprehensive visit takes a full day), crowded and expensive (at least for adults). Its coverage is broader than most, beginning with the period before war and extending into the Cold War period after WWII. I saw a lot of young people at the Caen museum, but the children in your group are extremely young. The Bayeux Museum is called the "Museum of the Battle of Normandy". As indicated by the name, it is narrower in scope, but it is a good, modern, museum.
