After visiting the beaches and monuments of Normandy, I'd like to ferry to either Jersey, Guernsey or both before ferrying to Ireland. Can I get some expert advice about the best way to do this. Thanks.
There's a ferry from St. Malo. I've had bad luck with it. In five attempts to take that ferry between France, the Channel Islands and England (currently it goes to Poole), the ferry was canceled twice. Last year the Jersey-Guernsey-England departure was canceled for 3 days running. Proceed with caution. I ended up flying to Luton.
Last year I only went to Jersey, which I decided had more specific sights to interest me. My much earlier trip included both islands, so I know Guernsey is worthwhile as well. On Jersey I especially enjoyed the war tunnels, which have been developed as a museum/memorial to the forced laborers who built the C.I. fortifications during WW II.
I found Poole a not particularly attractive seaside town. I recommend planning to stay somewhere else on the English coast if ferry and bus schedules permit.
I don't know anything about ferries to Ireland.
You can also get a Ferry from Granville to Jersey. You need to Google Manche Iles and Condor Ferries. As with travel anywhere by sea it is very weather dependant, been to France twice this summer by boat no problem, but this week with the tail end of the hurrican all the boats are in chaos. You can also fly Dinard to Guernsey, but i dont think there are any airlinks Jersey to France, but double check that. Once in Guernsey there is airlink to Jersey. And Victor Hugos house shoud be open again next spring, its where he wrote Les Miserable and is amazing, you wont see anything like it anywhere else in the world! His appartments in Paris are a shadow of the house here. Please feel free to private message me as a 'girl on the ground' if i can be of help.
