Is a one day d-day private tour enough of an overview of the battle or do you need 2 days? Husband would like 2, but I think one full day is enough. Any thoughts?
We spent one day at the American D-Day sites on a small tour and the second day we visited the British and Canadian beaches, Juno and Gold , and museums on our own. They were very worthwhile, especially the British. I agree with your husband, and I highly recommend two full days there.
We stayed in lovely Bayeux which is perfectly located for doing these WWII sites. Do not miss seeing the 11th century Bayeux Tapestry either. We liked our Bayeux hotel, Lion d’Or.
My father had landed at Omaha Beach, camped out at St- Mer Eglise and we were so glad we visited the whole area.
I would personally do an "overview of the battle" from home. Keep in mind that the battle for Normandy went from the beaches to Paris (actually from the ports of England), and lasted over three months. The five D-day beaches themselves are 45 miles apart as the crow flies. And of course, you can't fly because you have to go well inland from each beach to get to the others. Which is good, because some of the most monumental battles were inland from the beaches. Whether you tour alone or with a guide, do yourself a favor and learn some history of the battle ahead of time. Watch a couple of movies, or read at least one comprehensive book while waiting for your trip. However you travel, you will get more out of your trip this way. That being said, many people who have done a one-day tour have stuck around another day to see things they missed, or to spend more time at places they were hurried through.
We spent one day on a private tour, and then 4 additional days on our own. Before our trip, we did extensive research in order to have a solid amount of background knowledge. We also were in communication with our guide prior to the tour, and provided him with things that we were especially interested in seeing and doing.
We toured with a terrific guide for 3 full days, and would have done a couple more if we’d had time. Normandy is beautiful and so poignant. You won’t regret more time spent there.
