Normandy in early June

Our family is traveling to Normandy June 7-9, 2026. We’re worried there will be road closures and high crowds due to the D Day festival. We plan to stay in Arromanches-les-Bains. My son, age 10, loves WWII history and is excited to go. Would you recommend we avoid this time and go later in June? Are the D Day festivities and ceremonies worth it?

You would arrive the day after the D Day anniversary which is the 6th. Since all the dignitaries will be gone, there should be a minimum of road closures, unless one of the towns is having a festival. While it isn't one of the big anniversaries (those ending in 5 or 0), there will be crowds, not least because it falls on a weekend. I wouldn't necessarily avoid it unless crowds really bother you. There are several websites that will list all the events, as they are confirmed over the coming months, to help with plannng. I won't discuss it's worth, since the value a person places on a place or event is such a personal, and thus variable, thing.

We were there this year on the 3rd of June. I was a great time to visit as there were many war-era vehicles and motorcycles being driven around. We also experienced a fly-over by four C-130s when we were at Pointe du Hoc and again at the American Cemetery.

It's a great time to visit. I have gone to Normandy ten times—nine during the D-day anniversary, including the 70th, 75th and 80th anniversaries. It is a very special time to be there but does require some advance planning. Since 2026 is not a "0" or "5" anniversary, I wouldn't hesitate to go. But plan well ahead. You should be securing lodging now! And continue checking schedules for specific events you would like to attend (many of which will not be confirmed until a couple of months prior). If you're averse to crowds and celebrations, you could avoid that time of year. But you would be missing a very special time and the chance to see things you won't experience any other time of year. As noted, the official ceremony at the American Normandy Cemetery will be over by the 7th, so there shouldn't be many if any road closures. But there will still be a few events—particularly on that Sunday. And because it isn't an "0" or "5" anniversary, there shouldn't be any major heads of state attending anyway (US, France, UK). Go! Commemorate! Celebrate! Respect.
