I'm looking for tips/recommendations/websites for visiting the Normandy area cider producers. My husband and I will be based in Caen. We'll have a car. While searching for information, I read that the tour route is marked with red apple signs. Is it as simple as that? Follow the apples? I'd like to know about specific Cideries, opening times, etc. Any suggestions will be helpful.
Take a look at these:

If the links don't work, just Google "Pays d'Auge", a more specific identifier than Normandy. One of the above, the second I believe, includes a downloadable Cidre Route brochure with map. They can probably be picked up at any of the stops along the way.
Our approach was more random: we just pointed the car into the region and wandered somewhat aimlessly. Yes, you will see the signs you described. Through dumb luck, we happened into a terrific restaurant in Cambremer: Au Petit Normand. It was a memorable lunch, and I think we were lucky to get a table without a reservation. (http://www.auptitnormand.com/) Finally, FWIW, we were underwhelmed by the highly touted Beuvron-en-Auge, self-described as the most beautiful village in France. We found it too "Disney-like", with difficult parking and too many tourists (just like us.) Hopefully you will get more specific recommendations on the Cideries from others.
