Normandy, Burgundy, and Loire - places to stay

If you’ve been to any of the three regions do you have a favorite towns, places you’ve stayed and would recommend.

We are meeting my brother and sister in law in Normandy next week and will stop in Burgundy on the way there for 3 nights, then after Normandy we will head to Loire.

Budget is under 100€ a night. Either center of town, or place in the country with grounds for our lab to get some ball fetching in. We have rental cars.

In Burgundy, we stayed at Hotel de France located in Beaune. It is a more budget accommodation, but it served our needs and the staff was helpful. The restaurant is very good and a great value. We have been to the Loire twice. The first time we stayed in an actual chateau very close to Amboise which was memorable. They too have a wonderful restaurant. It is pricier but worth the slight splurge, I believe it is Michelin starred. www.chateaudepray.fr Another time we stayed again in Amboise and stayed at a very reasonably priced BnB in a very old and lovely property. Breakfast was nice and included. irisdesmarais.com Also on that trip, we wanted to be close to Saumur and we stayed at the Ibis Styles. Room was very sterile and clean. Breakfast was included and very nice. It was across from the train station and very convenient to the chateau and the historic area. In Normandy, we stayed in and very much liked Arromanches at Hotel Le Mulberry. The inn was inexpensive and very comfortable and the people very nice. Again, the restaurant was wonderful and we highly recommend. Breakfast was included and was very nice. We also stayed in Honfleur. We stayed at a lovely BnB, www.coursaintecatherine.com/b-and-b-honfleur-normandy , La CourSainte Catherine. It might be over 100Euro but not by much.

My favorite stay in Burgundy was Semur en Auxios. It's hard to pick, however, there is one beautiful medieval town after another.

I wasn't happy with Beaune primarily because my hotel wasn't good. I'd recommend staying either close to the big sights in the south half of town or stay well outside the ring road. The north part of town is pretty run down. Also have your lodging book restaurants for you. I found in Beaune if you don't need a reservation, it's probably a horrible restaurant. I liked the center of Dijon more than Beaune's center.

In Normandy, I particularly liked Fecamp. It has cliffs like Etretat but is more local than its more touristy neighbor. Bayeux is a nice small town.

In Loire, I was happy using Amboise as a base. It had a little of everything, chateaux in town and a small shopping/restaurant district. I also liked Chinon because it had a different (older) and authentic feel to it.

I very rarely pay anything close to 100 euro per night. I think the only place I've paid that is in Paris. Part of that is traveling alone (but most rooms are doubles) and part is because I travel during spring and fall when there are less crowds competing for rooms.
