We are planning to travel by train from Paris to Normandy and Brittany, and then on to Benelux.
We'd like to see WW II sites and Mont-St-Michel in Normandy and
St. Malo and Dinan as minimums in each area.
Is there one city that is accessible by train to these areas?
If not, are there preferred cities to stay in each region?
Thank you.
Thank you very much for the suggestions. I wish we had more than the time we have to explore.
The area sounds wonderful and it's tough narrowing down our destinations….like choosing one piece of candy in a terrific candy shop! We will investigate your ideas. Thanks again.
I've been to both places frequently and the best way to visit the WWII sites is by car. If you don't want to rent one, I'd stay in Bayeux and book a tour from there (there are lots listed in Rick's France book). There is also shuttle from the Hotel Churchill in Bayeux that takes visitors on a day-trip to Mont St. Michel. You don't have to be staying there, but it helps give you priority if the shuttle is full. I would not do this because Mont St. Michel is jammed during the day, but magical at night. So I'd stay in Bayeux for the WWII sites and then take an afternoon train to Portorson-Mont St. Michel (a bus meets the train in this village and will take you to the island). Stay overnight on the island and the next day take a bus that runs direct from Mont St. Michel to St. Malo--there may only be one per day so check on this carefully. Then take a train or a bus from St. Malo to Dinan (I think the bus is faster). You'll love these parts of France. Bon voyage.
What great specific information! Thank you so much. Seems like Bayeux is definitely the first stop after Paris.
We go in early March; thanks!
