I am trying to plan a road trip in Provence and making hotel reservations.
I have contacted two hotels, both through their websites making reservations. But, i have yet to receive a confirmation from either.
I have written 3 emails to one of the hotels with no response. There is nothing curious about either hotel, one in Avignon and the other in Aix. Am I missing something?
How long has it been? Sometimes a response is very quick, but other times it's taken a day or 2.
My first email was over a week ago because the website would not take my booking. i often have difficulty with the websites, i was told not to translate to English. Yesterday morning, I was able to book on website but no confirmation.
The second hotel in Aix has been over a week.
Thank you for your response
Am I missing something?
Maybe. Perhaps more than one thing.
As noted above, sometimes you just need to give them some time. You don't say if you've been waiting for a response for hours or weeks (posted at the same time as your update). Some folks here (the USA) seem to expect that the entire world is on their phones 24/7, waiting to text anyone immediately. A lot of the world isn't like that. Some places don't reply promptly, some just are not big users of email or other electronic forms of communication. That may seem hard for some of us to imagine, but plenty of places are not enthralled by electronic communication.
Another possibility: if a place is popular, and is already full for the time you requested, they may simply ignore your request - if effect, that's your answer (a lack of an answer).
Yet one more: some places don't "open" reservations (and ignore any requests) in their "off season". It's currently February. For reservations during the summer high season, some places don't even start taking reservations until a bit later in the year. This is actually quite common at small places. It would be nice if they would just respond and say "get back to us in April" or something, but sometimes they feel it's just too much trouble.
Keep trying (although it's usually not appreciated if you pester someone frequently). You could also try contacting them by phone. Or see if they are listed through some other system (eg try booking.com or look for their website).
Bottom line: if you keep trying and never get an answer, at some point you need to go with your second choice.
See if you can find those hotels on booking.com and if the prices are reasonable. Then just use booking.com and you'll receive an immediate confirmation. I don't think I've ever booked a hotel via email or by phone (but that's largely because I don't stay at real mom and pop places; most hotels I've stayed at using their website have enough capability to issue automatic confirmation). If a hotel doesn't respond, then I would just move on - booking a room shouldn't require so much effort when there are so many options out there.
Ellen, you probably know this, but just in case, check your spam filter. I've had foreign emails get caught there before.
Ellen,
Perhaps there is a problem with their website. Have you tried using their actual direct email, rather than the website link? Or giving them a call? Which hotels are they? Others have had similar problems with hotel websites, and when they used the direct hotel email, got an immediate response from the hotel front desk staff.
Thanks for all the suggestions. I think a phone call is in order.
Some may argue with this, but I often find cheaper reservations on booking.com, hotels.com, expedia.com etc. than on the hotel's own website. Instant confirmation too. So shop around.
I've had some troubles with (common in the US) email addresses not being received by some (usually smaller) hotels and not being accepted for registration on some European websites. When I switched to a gmail address, everything worked fine.
I had a similar difficulty with a hotel in Poland last fall - multiple emails went unanswered. (I checked spam, nothing there.) The hotel had a good reputation, so I stayed anyway and asked reception about the emails. They said they always answer emails, and I believe they were being genuine. We think they never received mine.
You might try a different email address.
