No chip credit cards

When I was in Paris in 2011 and 2013, my US credit cards that DO NOT have a chip worked just fine in all ATM machines. I got cash there and didn't have to worry about other machines rejecting my kind of cards.

I am headed back this summer. Would it be safe to assume that my same cards will still work in the ATM machines as before?

There are two answers to your question.

First, yes, any magnetic strip card will work in ATM machines. This will not change in any foreseeable future, ie: many years.

Second, I hope you aren't using a credit card in an ATM, which is a cash advance and very expensive. Perhaps you meant to say a debit or ATM card. Either way, it's the same answer as above.

I was in Italy and Paris a few months ago and was able to draw cash from my ATM card which has not chip without any issues.

If I remember correctly it would only draw out of Checking, not Savings.

ATMs draw from the primary account on the card -- there is no choice on the machine. US cards work fine. Of course never use a credit card for this as that is a loan with huge interest from the day of withdrawal.

Brenda,

If you'll only be using your cards for ATM withdrawals, then your cards should work fine with just a magnetic stripe. If you'll be using automated ticket Kiosks or similar (such as the ticket machines at CDG), then you must have a true "Chip & PIN" card.

if you're using a credit card in an ATM, you're getting a cash advance at approx. 22% interest. Read your next statement, you'll see that special interest category.

Thanks for the information. And, yes, I misspoke. I will be using my bank card that comes out of my checking account and they even refund ATM charges to me.
Glad to know that will still work.
