Nimes to Carcassone by car , with alternate route rather that the express way

With Michelin providing a 3 hr trip via expressway and with 5-6hrs available has anyone got anything worth suggesting that warrants detouring ,perhaps after Beziers.

Hi,
Yes, the area north of Beziers and Carcassonne is worth detouring into. A good route would be Nîmes - Montpellier via A9, Montpellier - Clermont l'Hérault via A750, then the slow D908 west towards Mazamet (just after Clermont, detour to Mourèze, great views of rock formations!), and south towards Carcasonne through the Montagne Noire. 5-6 hours sound about right for that.
