Hi Travel Friends,
Has anyone been to Nimes? RS books do not cover this place, but it seems to have some good Roman ruins with less crowd. I am mainly interested in parking advice for a stop between Carcassonne and St Remy.
Thanks,
Casey

We parked at a the Indigo Madison Carrée, a garage central to the Roman sites. I remember the spaces being especially tight, but it was otherwise a useful place to park.
Rick's "Provence and the Riviera" book includes Nimes, which has excellent Roman ruins and is close to the outstanding Pont du Gard. I picked up and returned a rental car there at an underground garage near the station. I think there's a lot of underground parking in that part of the city, an easy and beautiful walk to the old center and Roman sites. A Google search turned up a map showing six or seven parking places near the center and many more farther out. Check out the close-in ones, keeping in mind that it will be city driving.
While you could enjoy at least a couple of full days in Nimes, you could also get a lot out of a stop during a driving day.
Thanks for the responses. I had done the google maps search beforehand but wanted to get opinion from someone who had been there. I missed the Nimes reference in the guidebook since it is listed under Avignon. Is there anything other than the Ampitheater, the temple of Diana, the Augustan gate and the Maison Carrée temple that we should see while in Nimes?
The Museum Romanite is excellent. It’s close to parking and right across the street from the Arena.
I would add a stroll through the charming old town center to your list. Wandering the winding streets was an unexpected treat for me!
Nîmes is a really lovely town to wander, quite apart from the main attractions. I was there some years ago. I seem to remember it was very straightforward driving in (I was coming from Marseille) and using an underground car park near the historic centre.
I liked it a lot.
We drove to Nimes for the day in summer 2022. We parked in an underground garage near the center but don't remember which one. Our aim was the Roman artifacts museum (very good) https://museedelaromanite.fr/en/ before heading out to Pont du Gard (in late afternoon in late August there were very few other people).
Also if you are going to St Remy don't miss the ancient Roman city of Glanum just to the south. https://www.site-glanum.fr/en? There is easy parking there in a very large outdoor lot just across the street.
This is the kind of advice I was hoping to get from the travel forum. Thanks for your help, I would never have known about Glanum!
This is the kind of advice I was hoping to get from the travel forum. Thanks for your help, I would never have known about Glanum! You guys/gals are great! We are hoping to get to southern France in May 2025. We did northern France in 2019 and had a great time so we want to finish the country first pass.
