How do I take the train from Nice to Rome? I could take a short flight then travel by train or train then fly. Expect to be 1 or 11/2 day trip. edward
Using the ITA Matrix option (http://matrix.itasoftware.com/) and January 22 as a test example, the faster you get there, the more expensive it is. Using Air France/Alitalia the flight time is 1:10 for a non-stop and the cost is $370+. You can do one stop for less than half that price but the shortest flight time, 4:45, is on Vueling/Iberia with a layover in Barcelona. You need to check with the airlines themselves for the correct prices for the day you want to go.
For train schedules, how many stops and where and a great map showing the route, you can check DB Bahn (http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en). My test for the same day showed that you can take the train all the way from Nice to Rome and choose a route along the coast. The least number of train changes is 2 and the shortest travel time is about 8:45. Again, you would need to check for your exact date and buy tickets using SCNF (http://en.voyages-sncf.com/en/#menu-3) to get to Ventimiglia and...see the next paragraph.
This link to the Man in Seat 61 -- http://www.seat61.com/international-trains/trains-from-Nice.htm#NicetoItaly -- might help with your planning and lead you to the best way to buy tickets. The link should take you to the right spot for Nice to Rome. There are lots of options, but it sounds like the French and Italian train systems don't talk speak the same language.
edward,
If you have the time to spare, travel by train is a reasonable option. One trip you could consider is a departure from Nice Ville at 09:50, arriving Roma Termini at 18:35 (time 8H:45M, two changes at Ventimiglia and Milano Centrale). The last segment from Milan to Rome will be via Freccia high speed train which travels at up to 300 kmH. That trip will take the better part of one day, which fits your criteria.
I don't understand Lo's flight results, but of course they will vary with your planned travel date. For instance, using www.skyscanner.com for a test date of March 12, I see a direct, afternoon Nice-Rome flight on EasyJet for $41. That is what I expected to find, not unusual.
Probably just a difference in sample date choice. When I tried 20 January, different airlines and higher prices came up for the one-stop options. That's why I suggested checking with the airlines I found for the real date. It's also good to check other schedule aggregation websites.
About the train, I have taken the route that goes along the water as much as possible and that was very enjoyable. And I have taken the Frecciarossa between Rome and Milan. That's also fun.
Best schedule? Best price? Best route? It's all up to Edward to choose. But, unless he wants to stop along the way, he can make the trip in a day or much less.
Thank you so much for your expert replies. Ed
