We will be flying from Nice to Orly airport in mid-July.
What would be the most advisable arrival time to reach Orly, from Nice, to ensure we will make our 8:30 pm departure to US?

Assuming it is a separate ticket, I'd plan on 5 to 6 hours. Flight from Nice could get delayed. You need all the cushion you can get.

I've done what you planning to do which I think is fly into Airport A for an international flight on the same day using unconnected tickets. When I do that and I am doing it in a few weeks, I do it with some trepidation but I allow myself 2 flight cancellations to get there meaning that if the flight I am scheduled to take is cancelled, there are still two more flights that will get me to my internatonal flight on time. Usually, that has amounted to arrving about 8 hours before the ETD for the international flight. And, frankly, I try to avoid doing this when possible and arrive mid-day the day before the international flight.

Looks like you'll be flying Hop! from Nice to Orly, and they seem to have flights every half hour or so between noon and 4 pm. Looks like the 1:50 pm flight would get you there buy 3:20 pm, and still have at least 2 later flights that will get you there by 4:30 pm, and a couple more after that.
