Nice then up to Annecy/Chamonix

We will be arriving in Nice from Italy in early-mid May and had a few questions:

  1. Would you spend 1 or 2 nights in Nice, and what would you do for 1-2 days of day trips?
  2. How would you get from Nice to Annecy/Chamonix? We hope to do our travel by train and not rent a car. Not sure if that is realistic, and if so, what train route to take.

We went to Nice and Annecy last year. Spent a week in Nice. Some down time watching the waves, the aquarium in Monaco, plus some Matisse, Picasso, and modern art up in the hills. What to see or do depends upon your tastes and interests.

We took the TGV to Lyons and connected to local train to Annecy. For the trip from Annecy into the mountains we hired a driver - money well spent as we had a specific destination in mind that required train - train - bus - cab and then the return trip. We were four older women which affected some of our choices.
