We will be in Paris (myself, daughter, sister and mom) for just an overnight, about 28 hours in mid June. My sister would really like for us to have a nice, Parisian dinner that night, something more than a cafe or casual place. I've looked at a few online and some had a kids menu, do all of them have kids menus? Can anyone recommend one, that even my 6 year old would enjoy? We would like to stay under 50euros per person.
Children’s menus are not common in Europe. In Paris, at a nice restaurant, the chef gave our grandson mashed potatoes and chicken, off the menu.
I vacationed in Paris with my 7 year old daughter and husband two years ago. During our nearly 3 week stay in the city we observed very few young children eating at nice restaurants in the evening! I had read up on kids and dining out in Paris before we left because experiencing the food culture is huge part of travel for us, but even still I was very surprised by how few children were at restaurants. Maybe they stuck families at tables in the back -- ha! My advice is to eat at cafe or casual restaurant -- the food will be just as good and sometimes better -- or dine very early in the evening before 6PM. Enjoy Paris -- it is a wonderful.
If your child loves chocolate, you can try Chez Janou which has unlimited chocolate mousse for dessert.
It's off the tourist path, so it's very French, no English menus, but that's half the fun!
Restaurants typically take dinner reservations from 8pm (sometimes 7:30pm) to 10pm, probably too late for most young children. Very few restaurants, particularly other than those which are casual, have menus for children. Cafés, which serve all day long, might be a better choice.
Of course children travel with their parents and restaurant owners and chefs recognize this but I would really hesitate taking a 6 year old to a well regarded restaurant in Paris.
Hippopotamus is a good one, and there are even booster seats.
No need to spend 50 EU per person if the child doesn't eat much.
Remember that food is served for lunch at about 12, and afterwards at about 7:30 PM.
I would not take a six year old to a high grade Paris restaurant unless they could be trusted to be very well-behaved throughout the evening and I had verified that there were things on the menu that they were willing to eat. "Kids' menus" aren't such a big thing in Europe as portions are usually smaller than in the USA, so a child would probably not have problems with an adult portion.
This restaurant/Cafe is not fancy, but I eat there often. The blackboard lists the daily specials and there is a large menu also. It’s in the heart of the Marais. I’m sure they have something on the menu that a 6 year old would like. It’s a popular, bustling place.

Family time in restaurants is Sunday lunch, especially with indulgent grandparnets. Otherwise you are more likely to see families in ethnic-oriented places. It's not that kids are unwelcome at other times, they just are not taken. For toddlers, booster seats are not automatically available. But as long as your child does not expect to treat the café as a playground, the staff probably will be helpful. After all, they welcome dogs too; I saw one with his own seat beside three adults.
50 Euros per person? Wow.
Thanks everyone! I figured Paris might be a little different than other places we've been but wanted to check. My daughter is a great traveler and very well behaved so that is not an issue. We don't want fine dining, that's not us, just wondered if there was something a little nicer than what I have in my mind of what a cafe or really casual place is. I'll take a look at all of the recommendations.
Try Cafe Varenne. It's a nice place and I have taken an 8 year old there and it was fine. The food is quite good.
