Nice hotels in Bayeux near train station and also parking area for Normandy tour

We are flying in from the US and planning to take the train from Paris to Bayeux. We would like to stay in a nice hotel (2 nights) close to the train station (if this is even possible) and also one that would allow us to walk to the parking/meeting area to start our full day tour. The parking area is listed as "Parking Québec-Orangerie, Pl. du Québec, Bayeux, Normandie, France". Is all of this possible? I've reviewed some hotel recommendations for the area based on a review of the message boards (Hotel Tardif is one of them) but due to our unfamiliarity of the area it's difficult to figure out the proximity of these locations. Thank you.

There are lots of hotels close to the rendezvous point. Have you tried Google maps? My husband and I walked from the train station to Manoir St Victoire (more of a bed and breakfast) and to the rendezvous point and everywhere else in Bayeux. That's the meeting point for all their bus tours. But it's really close to hotel Churchill and Reine Mathilde and many others.

Go to the tourist bureau website and it has a town map online. bayeux-bessin-tourisme.com/en/brochures. You will see a map of Bayeux. Click on it to enlarge and you can download it. The town central is compact. Try Booking.com to find lodgings and they always have a map option to see where a place is. When you have some ideas for lodgings, come back to the forum with them and you may get some opinions about them on the forum. Not always necessary to go through Booking.com, but they have reliable info and maps to suss out proximity to stations, etc. Also, the group you booked your tour with should be able to answer your questions about proximity of hotel to pick-up location for the tour.

The train station in Bayeux is on the outskirts of town--on the ring road--about 1 km. from the center. Although I like to stay relatively near train stations so I can dump my luggage as soon as possible, in Bayeux that will put you in an area with probably no nearby restaurants except the restaurant in the one hotel located near the station, the Hotel de la Gare: https://www.hotel-delagare-bayeux.fr/. I like to use the hotel reviews on booking.com to vet potential lodgings, but this hotel doesn't seem to be listed there, so you'll need to look elsewhere for information. I have no personal experience with the Hotel de la Gare, and I don't know whether there would be a problem with traffic noise due to the location. The hotel is less than 1/2 mile from the parking lot you mentioned.

There are a lot of hotels in Bayeux, so you should have some good options closer to the lovely medieval center if you're prepared for a bit of a walk with luggage, though I guess taxis are available at the train station.

I think there are taxis pretty easily available. I didn't find it hard to walk 10-15 minutes with luggage but we were farther in than the rendezvous point, too.

I would be so sad if I'd stayed near the train station and discovered that I had completely missed the boat on staying in the beautiful, charming city center (where Pl du Quebec parking is in the heart of)...take a taxi from the train station and enjoy a hotel in the city center.

Hotel Tardiff is only a 5 minute walk to Pl du Quebec where the tour buses meet up. You'll never set foot in a more charming parking lot with the river and little bridges.

Thank you for all for this information! Yes, I am very familiar with Google maps and use it frequently- not sure why I hadn't considered that first; however, hotel recommendations may be the primary goal here since it appears most likely we will take a taxi from the train station to a hotel based on these recommendations. I will also seek out reviews of specific hotels using various sites as suggested. This is only my second time overseas so just trying to be sure I am planning correctly.

We stayed in an AirBnB (although we found it thru Bookings) a “long” block from the Bayeux Cathedral. As someone else mentioned, the train station is located about a 15-25 minute walk from the center of Bayeux. We walked our roller bags & didn’t have a problem, other than the lack of sidewalks or the narrowest of walkways.
We purchased our train tickets online. Bayeux does NOT have a customer information window at the train station; nor is there anyone to ask questions about train travel there. Just do your research & you should be okay.
The parking area you mentioned is easy to locate & all tours seem to leave from this area. Also, the Information Center has nice staff that mostly speak English.

We did the same trip as you describe. There were two taxis waiting at the train in Bayeau. Stayed at Villa Aggarthi and my son did also this last April. It was a wonderful B and B with great location..And free.on site parking. Can certainly very highly recommend HQCompany tours..Others have just posted about them as well. It was one of the best things we ever did. Enjoy. You will not be disappointed.

This past spring, my husband and I stayed two nights at the Hotel Reine Mathilde just a block from the day tour meeting location on Pl du Quebec. The hotel was charming with a very nice breakfast, convenient to the meeting spot and was also close to everything else we wanted to do in town.

The sidewalks from the train station were narrow in places although the route was flat and the 15 minute walk was easy enough to navigate. But we do travel extremely light with 21” bags. I wouldn’t hesitate to take a taxi from the station if that’s more your comfort zone.

We also stayed at Hôtel Reine Mathilde in July, 2024, one night. Wish we’d stayed two. We walked there from the train station and it was a bit of a walk, maybe 20 min. Kind of hard with small backpacks. The outdoor attached restaurant below was good and it was a nice hotel with AC. It’s right near the meeting place you mentioned, about 5 min. Nice town!

We stayed at Hotel Tardif in August. No AC, but it was just fine!

And, the property was so so lovely. Truly.

We had two tours that left from the area you mention and they were 5-7 minute walks. No big deal at all.

We loved the hotel and the location.

It was a few years ago but we spent four nights at Castel au Lop and it really was ,Ike a little castellated place. Easy walk from train station, parked our hire car in a public place very close by, excellent breakfasts, easy walk into the main street. Historic cathedral just across the road, Tapestry centre around the corner.
I am not experienced in driving on the right but it is a quieter area of France and had no trouble driving along the Normandy beaches, down to Mont St Michel and as far inland as Falaise.
We did take a little ‘detour’ after Mont St Michel and roundabouts in Liseux were interesting but we managed.
Loved Bayeux immensely, lovely restaurants especially La Rapiere and in particular its seafood casserole in small Staub cast iron pots.
Bought a few back home inAustralia and in 2024 did an Alscace vineyards and villages walk starting in Turckheim , the home of Staub.

TonySullivan, we are also from Australia and visiting Normandy for the first time in October.

Whilst we have been to France many times, we haven't been to Normandy and we haven't driven.

From your post it looks like it won't be too difficult to manage driving on the "wrong" side of the road, I hope not at least!

We plan to pick up a car in Rouen, spend time there, in Etretat, Honfleur, then three nights in Bayeux before one at Mont Saint Michel before returning to Paris and our familiar train travel.

Such a shame that the tapestry won't be there though, at least it is an excuse to go back.
