Nice, France- Large Barrel Curling Iron

Hello everyone- first post on these forums. THRILLED to have an alternative to trip advisor which seems to master condescension and frustration with tourists. ;)

We are about to take our 5th trip to Nice France, for the first time in the off-season and specifically for the Christmas markets. I am SO excited. I have had difficulty in the past finding a large barrel curling iron...pharmacies and salons don't carry them, and the Carrefour grocery store we frequent didn't have any either. We are staying at an apartment near Rue de France and I'm wondering where I cold find one that isn't outrageously expensive...Gallery Lafayette has one for 200 euros, which is a bit steep. ;)

Would it be worth a walk to the Monoprix, Hema or Darty? I'd really like to own one for European plugs given how often we go.

Thanks so much!

The Babyliss brand is well priced and has a variety of large barrel fer à bouclée well under 100€. babyliss.fr I’ve bought this brand before in France and the dryers have worked fine. The babyliss website has a “find a retailer” function, but I couldn’t find a large barrel one in Nice.

Would the apartment owner/manager be willing to accept and hold a package in advance for you? If so, you could buy on line either from babyliss, or amazon.fr. (Free shipping in France)

My last few trips to France, I’ve done a certain amount of successful internet shopping in advance for things that are hard to find, or just time consuming to locate. If you stay with manufacturers websites or amazon, everything should be fine.

In this case, I’d probably use amazon.fr. Log in to the French site using your existing amazon account if you have one, and then add the French shipping address.

JUST ADDED: Be sure to buy it on the French site with a French shipping address so you get the 220v model with the French plug. The US site sells 110v.

Have a great trip ... be sure to buy some santons!

I just went onto Amazon and searched for "curling iron with European plug". Quite a few came up. Some may have too small a barrel, but you can check that out.

I use (with short hair) what looks like a curling iron, but it has a brush on the barrel and blows hot air, the barrel doesn't get hot.
On my first trip to Italy I brought it and an electric converter that was brand new. The first morning in the hotel, it blew a circuit breaker. They sent an electrician right up and he said try again. I did and it blew again! I went and talked to the owner at the front desk and she asked me not to use it again. I explained what it was and she said she had a brand new one in the package that she hadn't used and offered to let me borrow it. I was so grateful. Next day I'm wondering what I'm going to do for the rest of my trip, as this was in Rome our starting point. I went and talked to her and asked if she would consider selling it to me.
She agreed and gave me a price which was much less than I thought it would be. I gave her the cash right then. That curling brush has been to Europe with me 6 more times!

If you try to find one here, it will save you a lot of valuable time on your vacation searching for one!
Have a Great Trip!

I looked up Babyliss, and I haven't been able to find any Nice locations either. I worry about amazon because the apartment owner does not live on site and until I see it, I don't know if it will be large enough. Don't really want to spend the money and not know.

That sounds familiar regarding your original curling iron too! I had all the right converters etc and it just never heated up. I really hope to buy.

Thank you both!

I'm sad you couldn't find anything at Carrefour. I'd have bet that Darty could have solved your problem too. If they don't have anything the only other choice I would have considered is a hairdresser's supply store - sorry I haven't looked for one yet.

Good luck....

You should try the Darty near Jean Medecin. I'm pretty certain they'll have a broader selection than Galeries (at a better price).

You might the small electronics shop at 58 Rue de France, that has the selection of personal care electronics. Price wise, your best bet would be Darty or Ubaldi, or Amazon.

Amazon will ship to Point de Relais and to Amazon Locker locations in Nice. There are several in the Carre d'Or and just into the Fleurs.
