I've lived in Paris on and off for four years but today saw a variation on the beggar's cup that I hadn't seen before. It requires a road or street with a fair number of pedestrians passing by - but not too much of a crowd. The beggar sits down and uses a plastic see through cup in which he places a few copper centime coins. Then instead of waving the cup at you as you pass, or keeping the cup close to him, he places it in the middle of the pavement/sidewalk. Being see-through plastic, most people don't see it until it's too late by which time they have kicked it over, scattering the cup and it's meagre contents. The beggar looks hurt and/or indignant and invariably the unsuspecting passer-by feels awkward and helps pick the coins and the cup up and often adds one or two coins of his or her own by way of an apology. Anything above 5 centimes then goes in the beggar's pocket and he places the cup in the middle of the thoroughfare again. This technique guarantees the beggar some attention and therefore 50% of his mission has already been achieved.
There's long been a "fork in the road," now there's a "cup in the sidewalk!"
Ah .. creative begging.. have to admire that.. lol
I think I've seen something similar but not sure if it was in Paris. I had this experience in the train station in Pisa. A young woman beggar approaches me with her hand out and palm up with a couple euros on the palm--don't think she was offering those coins to me. Her shoes looked nicer than mine...
The beggars and pickpockets in Paris and Rome are among the best and most creative in the world.
On a recent trip to Paris, I was hanging out at one of the secondary churches, and observed one old woman during the evening rush hour, hunched over, begging with a shaking hand for "spare change". It was a pitiful sight to behold. When the crowds thinned out after the rush hour, the woman straightened up, picked up her plastic cup, and, I could have sworn, walked tall to the nearest metro. I now look upon beggars with a jaundiced eye.
Guilt will get you anywhere!
