New restaurant on Mont Saint Michel

The mediocre quality of the restaurants at Mont Saint Michel in Normandie has long been a topic of discussion and complaint. The food generally isn't terrible. It just isn't that good.

Looks as if that's about to change. According to an article in Ouest France a Michelin-starred chef, Jean Imbert, has joined forces with cookware manufacturer Mauviel 1830 to open a higher-quality restaurant on the island. Here's a translated excerpt from the beginning of the article:

The Logis Sainte-Catherine is located on the narrow streets of
Mont-Saint-Michel (Manche). Instead of walking along the ramparts that
line the main shopping street, you'll have to duck behind the town
hall and brave the steep steps of the Monteux staircase. At the top, a
garden allows you to catch your breath and admire the silhouette of
the abbey on one side and the bay as far as the eye can see on the
other. From here, a small gate leads to the restaurant. “It's a bit
like a country house lost in the Mont. I loved the idea of being alone
in the heights,” says Jean Imbert.

It's apparently a small place, however, capacity will double in April when the terrace opens to diners. The restaurant's official opening was yesterday, 16 January 2025.

I plan to check it out the next time I drive down there to visit. Probably this autumn.

My wife and I were staying in Caen and while at dinner struck up a conversation with a young couple at the table next to us. They were natives of Normandy and when we mentioned we were going to Mont Saint-Michel the next day, Friday, April 25th, he strongly recommended this restaurant. We arrived at the abbey at mid-morning and went on an extended guided tour. After the tour we struggled to find the restaurant (we had to ask for directions in a different restaurant and they hadn't heard of it). By the time we found it and were seated it was about 2:30 pm. We sat at a small window table across from the bar with a lovely view overlooking the terrace toward the mainland. Because it was so late, the restaurant was out of our first two choices for lunch, so we decided on the scallops and the stuffed crab. My wife was pleased when they brought butter with the bread, as this was the first meal we had had since arriving in Europe where butter was included, and it wasn't just any butter. It was blended with spices and was very tasty. The entrees were small but delicious. The desserts were even better than the main. Hers was a mango tart with cream and mine was The Kouign-amann. The latter is the only item from our meal still on the menu, and I highly recommend it.
