We are a group of 8 traveling to Lyon for the Women's World Cup in early July. I would love some ideas about where to stay in or just outside the city, without the need for a car rental. Hotels and such close in seem very expensive and our group size makes it difficult to find a place. Any ideas for a neighborhood or a village with some character that is close to public transport to get into the city? Thank you!
I stayed at Premiere Classe hotel nr Lyon train station. It is very clean, affordable and central to walk everywhere.
If u book soon hopefully they can accomodate your grp. They have almost 150 rooms.
We are also in town for the World Cup and found a small B&B for the two of us but unfortunately she only has 2 rooms so no luck for your group there. I will say this -- we booked almost 2 months ago and were shocked at the lack of rooms already at that time. Most of the available rooms were 250-400 per night.
The one place we did find plenty of rooms was at hostels -- I would check out Slo living hostel (they have private rooms) and Away hostel. Both responded to me very quickly with room rates and availability. A few months back they had plenty of room.
Good luck!
We booked a few months ago as well and there wasn't a lot to left in the city at that point.
I think if you go 45 minutes away or so you should be able to find something. I have no idea about any of the surrounding areas but I remember seeing things available in Villefontaine.
We are doing a 2 week trip and moving around quite a bit and a lot of France seems pretty booked up.
My daughter and I stayed at the OKKO hotel in Lyon when we attended the worlds Masters game in Lyon a few years ago - loved it . Location was great - we walked everywhere! Rate included a nice breakfast AND in early evening they put out a buffet of snacks which we sometimes made our dinner ( it was not a dinner buffet but some appetizers etc but was enough for us ) . Rooms were clean but small .
We’ll be staying at the Hotel Globe et Cecil in Lyon next week. It sounds and looks very nice if reviews prove true. You might want to check it out.
I stayed at an Airbnb that was on the side of a hill. The place was fine for me but I'd recommend something on flatter ground for others. If you look at Google maps of Lyon, there is a funicular train that takes you up to the Roman theaters from the old center of town. That's where the hill starts, and it's quite steep. If you draw a line parrallel to the river in that area, I'd recommend staying between that line and the river. It's flat and has plenty of cafes, restaurants, bars, to enjoy. After that, I'd recommend the area directly across the river (between the rivers) in that same area. Hope that helps.
