Hi Nitu, two days in Paris is not a lot of time so you'll need to prioritize what you want to see and do. Get a guidebook and let the family have some input.

There's no best location to stay in Paris. Pick a hotel within your budget, near a metro station. Most people recommend the single digit neighborhoods (I like the 4th and 7th). Check the Rick Steves Paris book for recommendations and reviews.

For day one, I'd suggest the Eiffel Tower (purchase tickets 90 days in advance on their official website). Then take a one hour boat ride on the Seine River (you can buy same-day tickets at the base of the Tower). Walk over to the Champs Elysees and take the 300 steps up to the top of the Arc du Triomphe. If you still have time and energy, you're not far from Napoleon's Tomb, the military museum, and the Rodin Museum and garden.

Day two, depending on your interests, you could visit the Louvre or D'Orsay Museums. Or Notre Dame Cathedral (you can take the 400 steps to the top for great view of the city and the gargoyles) and stroll around the two islands.

You may want to re-think the amount of luggage you're taking and pack much lighter. It will be a real pain dragging that stuff all over Europe! I've found a taxi from the hotel to the train station works best for me.

Hope you have a great trip!

If you wanted maximum freedom and personal discovery (ie no HOHO bus/organized tour) then keep it simple ...
June 1 - Check out Arc de Triomphe and Champs Elysees after your arrival
June 2 - Eiffel Tower (book) + Musee d'Orsay (you could possibly add Napoleons Tomb)
June 3 - Notre Dame + Louvre (you could possibly add Sainte Chapelle)

We (me, husband, kids 9 and 11) stayed 2 nights at Novotel Les Halles and thought it was a good location for us.

Please take less luggage. Each person takes a carry-on size, plus a small backpack or purse MAX. I have seen many people struggling with big luggage on trains, and we whiz right by with our small bags. You will regret bringing big luggage, especially on trains.

Have a good trip! Paris is lovely.

Ditto with Kim about not bringing big bags for independent travel. Each person should have an expandable 22" and a backpack at the most. If you were on a tour where bags are handled for you, a large bag would be ok, but not independent travel.

My guess is that you don't have a choice with the amount of luggage you'll have with you. It will be a hassle but not too bad. Use taxis to get to and from the train stations. Allow enough time for city traffic and getting through the train station to your platform. In London, you must allow at least 1/2 hour for security and check-in before departure. In Paris, there is likely to be a long line for taxis when you arrive (a lot of other passengers will want them too).

Hi Nitu, a Hop On Hop Off bus tour might be a good idea. It will give you and your family an overview of the area so you know where sites are located.

Another option is the #69 bus which you can board near the Eiffel Tower. The route is covered in the Rick Steves Paris book.

Nitu,
You are already planning what, to me, is an inadvisably fast trip. You plan to blitz through 2 of the largest and greatest cities in the world, with teen-aged kids. On top of that you plan to be schlepping around a lot of luggage. I am not a devotee of the more extreme travel light school of thought often voiced on this forum, BUT you can easily make do with a 22" bag/pp and a carry-on, e.g. smallish backpack/pp. We typically travel for a month that way. I usually carry 2 pairs of shoes, in addition to the ones I wear, at least 5 pants/skirts, 5 - 10 tops, sleepwear, underwear, toiletries, electronics, books, etc. I've actually gotten by with a 20" bag and carry-on. Unless you will be needing formal clothes for a special event, there is no need for anything more.

Q1) We have found, on our trips to Paris, including those with our kids, that the 6th Arrondisement is within walking distance of many (but not all) sites. This area is also called St. Germain.

Q2) This totally depends on the interests of your family, and honestly is not very much time at all; you have a very fast-paced trip. Our family likes art, so we would definitely spend at least 1/2 day at the Louvre, and a couple of hours at the Musee d'Orsay. We would visit the Eiffel Tower, but not necessarily spend the time to go up it. Do a lot of walking and sitting at cafes. In the evening, take a boat ride down the Seine - we like the Bateaux Vedettes du Pont Neuf.

Q3) I would also suggest that you try to take four smaller checkin bags, one for each of you, plus the carry-on bags (some of which should be backpacks); it will make the train travel much easier.

Q4) Taxi would be much the easiest. This also would be easier with smaller bags. One time, we were traveling in Italy with two friends, who had each brought large luggage (we had one 21-inch bag and one 24-inch bag and a carryon each) - the cab drivers took one look at our group of four, and made us take two cabs.
