Need help to plan trip after Paris!

Hi,

My wife and I are traveling to Paris for our one year wedding anniversary.
So we booked the flight to Paris long time ago after finding a great deal! $425 RT from Texas.
When we booked, we made it a 10-day trip. Originally we were planning on doing 4 nights in Paris and 6 nights in Switzerland.
Then we changed our mind about doing Switzerland because we don't skii and decided that a 6 day countryside trip with endless mountains will get boring after a couple days. We are a young couple 27-28 looking for a more fun/romantic place to go next but now can't decide where to go instead of Switzerland. Reminder we only have 6 nights.

Any suggestions on where to go next?

Amsterdam or Berlin. They're like Austin or Brooklyn but also beautiful and historic (well, Berlin not necessarily the prettiest.) In both cities, a good mix of smart, fun, interesting museums and culture and great nightlife, restaurants, cafes, theatre, concerts. Check and see if any of your favorite bands are playing in any cities you'll be visiting. Kind of fun to go to a gig in a new place.

I replied on your other thread in the Spain forum. Perhaps a mod can merge these threads so there aren't a bunch of duplicate replies.

Lots of beautiful places in France itself: Alsace and Normandy come to mind. Normandy of course has a lot of awesome World War II history.

It's easy to head up to Belgium or even up to Amsterdam. Easy to kill six days in Belgium: Bruges, Ghent, Brussels...and then come back to Paris to fly out. Amsterdam is easy too, by train, if you want to explore another big city after Paris. The towns in Belgium would be a much more romantic experience in my view.

Going to Berlin probably means flying each way given the limited time you have, so I personally wouldn't recommend it. I wouldn't rate Berlin as particularly "romantic" in any case.

Have you considered Bruges?

France itself is full of wonderful things to see and do. Were you interested in renting a car?

I like traveling to cities that are easy to get to from each other.
Paris is a centrally located city, and it's an easy train ride on the Eurostar to London (2 1/2 hours.)
Another great city is Barcelona which can be reached by a fast train from Paris in 6 1/2 hours.
Amsterdam is also a very easy city to get to from Paris by train, and it's especially lively for young adults--and one of my favorites.

I never tire of The Alps, however Switzerland is a little expensive for my tastes. We prefer Bavaria and especially Tirol in Austria as easier to navigate. Only problem is that this region is a long way from Paris and flights between Paris and Munich are not inexpensive.

With the advent of budget European airlines, you can go to just about any European city of your dreams for $100 or less. It's opened up a new world of travel on the continent that's affordable.

I have yet to visit Reims and the Champagne houses; tgv gets you there in about an hour. Also in my bucket list is Lyon, easy train. I took the RS tour of Paris and the heart of France last fall; look at the trip to see what you might do on your own. I loved Amboise and the chateaus. Bourges was great and I would return for longer; we only had a one nighters there. The cathedral there is fabulous. Mont st Michel is very romantic, stay the night to get the full experience.

You could stay in Paris the whole time. I am returning to Paris for 3 weeks this fall and love it. So many day trips to do. Search this site for day trips from Paris. There is a book of that title too, or something very similar.

Last fall I joined a photography meetup group and did a couple of things with them. We visited a night market that I would never have known about in my own, food, music. Paris Photography is the name, there are probably many of them. If you pm me I can give you names of the organizers so you know which group I am referring to. Many are expats so English was spoken. I also visited a beautiful park that I did not know about and walked around with a very interesting retiree. The. The group meets at a cafe for a drink of whatever you like. Very civilized! This was the first time I had used Meet Up. I still get the group emails and will join them this fall too.

I love Villefranche sur mer, 5 km from Nice; that is an almost 6 hr train trip from Paris. Cheap airlines might get you to Nice faster. So many things to see by bus or train from Nice or Villefranche. Search this site for Villefranche, a RS tour introduced me to the town over 10 years ago and I am visiting for the 4th time this fall. A nice sand beach.

Enjoy your trip

I wonder during what time of year this trip would be occurring. That might have something of an influence on what might be appropriate or interesting.
